All those fluffy numbers are also on my fave list, although loveo2o did not stay with me as re-watchable as much as You Are My Glory or Falling into your smile, or The King's Avatar ;)
If you are in for some change of focus, try Filter (absolutely delightful, very unpredictable at first, and the Looney Tune references were adding smiles and laughs from me, fluffy end);
and if you are willing to go to realistic slice of life, try Northward (praised by no less than a Nobel prize winner, good end), still the talk of the town in China.
Here is a selection of other dramas in different genres that I liked : * To The Wonder (2024 short, different, realistic with food for thought) * Reset (2022 short, thrilling time loop with no dull moment and Bai Jingting + Zhao Jinmai); * Drifting away (2025 short, but it's a very dark crime story, Zhao Jinmai again) ; * The First Shot (2024 police story with Huang Jingyu..., also Lin Boyang), * Love Song In Winter (2024 Huang Jingyu and Sun Qian) -you saw it, hope you liked it too? * The Tale of Rose (2024 for mature audience, Liu Yifei as the titular Meigui, from her 20s to late 40s + awesome Lin Gengxin. Respect to one excellent and independent minded actor, who got his statue in Madame Tussaud Shanghai last month, as God Xing Zhi from The Legend of Shen Li xianxia drama of last year; Lin Yi gushed his admiration and thanks to fellow actor, in parting message for The Tale of Rose at the time, back in 2024) * A Journey to Love (2023 long, sad end wuxia, all in cast very individual and memorable) * One and Only + Forever and Ever (2021 tragic historical + reincarnation modern story), * Love Like The Galaxy (2022 very long historical, good end, hot fluff, battles, comedy, addictive Wu Lei and Zhao Lusi). * Love Between Fairy and Devil (2022 beautiful fluffy xianxia, Dylan Wang and Esther Yu) * Arsenal Military Academy (2019 impressive cross dressing Bai Lu and Xu Kai) * As Beautiful as You (2024 business romance, Seven Tan and Xu Kai) * Joy of Life (2019 classic now, far-future "historical", with a long list of memorable actors and actresses and Zhang Ruoyun, whose "banned" historical drama The fated general may get to screen sometime this year or next). Season 2 last year was also worth watching.
I am probably forgetting to quote the names of dozens more interesting ones. I wrote a few long "companion pieces" with background details and pictures, maps.... for some of the above (I do that whimsically, usually when I think I could add facts and views about what is there, so it does not mean those I wrote for are all favorites of mine, nor that those I did not write companion pieces for are not on my favorite list). Link through my personal page.
Adding that among the first c-dramas I liked after being mostly a movie watcher, were *2017 The Legend of the Condor Heroes (Huang Rong, Guo Jing, Yang Kang... - Li Yitong, Yang Xuwen, Chen Xingxu...) *2017-2021 The Eternal Love 1-2-3 (Qu XiaoTan, 8th Prince - Liang Jie and Xing Zhaolin) *2018 Ashes of Love (for Runyu and Jinmi - Luo Yunxi and Yang Zi) *2019 The King's Avatar (Yang Yang as Glory game master) *2022 The Imperial Coroner (for ChuChu and Prince An - Wang Ziqi)
I have added this in the concluding part of the companion piece, after Bai Lu's farewell to her role, from her…
Thank you for your tireless watch for news about Bai Lu ! (from which I was happy to copy some info into the "piece" :) Two days till release of KRS13 pilot? I receive a lot of shorts on YT about Bai Lu and KR now. Hope it will be up on the subtitled channel speedily for all those interested. I looks like there is a bunch of them.
Why is the profile of the animation version not on MDL?
because there is an alternate site for animation, on which MDL drew to set up their version for movies, tv series, and tv shows. -- I too looked up MDL to get info about Nezha2, but ended up looking at the Wikipedia page instead, before remembering that MDL is not for animes, donghua and the like. Not really interested in the movie version on this page, anyway. But not being a hardcore anime or donghua fan, I don't visit the other site, which my son is more familiar with, lol
Yes, but let's wish for her to reap internationally recognized big awards now, personally, that she can add to her Weibo and iQiyi trophies. It's time she gets clearly recognized after having been named iQIYI Global ambassador since last year. Northward is still not enough recognized in my opinion. Of course, c-drama watchers often prefer simple love stories or "historical"/fantasy costume dramas, instead of realistic, slice-of-life, very true to time and places dramas such as that one. It's good to know such wide Chinese audiences did enjoy Northward!
I’m confused about Siyi’s parentage. Was Siyi’s grandfather Italian?
Actually, since the family line of Siyi is probably something many wonder about, I added a full explanation with "bloodline" in the last part of the characters and cast details, here, at the end : https://mydramalist.com/discussions/740015-bei-shang/139272-companion-piece-for-northward-beishang?pid=3281750&page=1#p3281750 But since this is part of the mystery that gets unraveled only in the end, it is better not to read that information before having reached episode 35 or 38, unless you don't mind spoilers.
I have now completed my long Companion piece. It has everything about the drama: dates, music, crew, characters, actors, places, times, reception and appreciation by no less than the Nobel prize winner Mo Yan, ... with lavish illustrations, microbios, and links, systematic list of characters by order of appearance, introduction to the Grand Canal geography and history, and to the towns of Bacheng ("Flower Street"), Kunshan/Suzhou, Beijing, Tongzhou, the period, etc. The sections are linked together and have been checked to be watched both in white and black mode. https://mydramalist.com/discussions/740015-bei-shang/139272-companion-piece-for-northward-beishang
Minrui(he is a famous make up artist in china) shares his thoughts about Northward "Finally I've finished watching…
That was a very nice and heartfelt testimony to which I can also relate, very personally, on many counts for that period experience. The evolution of the character, growth, carefree laughs, challenges, hurdles, disappointments, changes of focus, despair and delights, are so well portrayed, in tune and music with the vibrant times (not only because of the frantic hammering and drilling of construction everywhere) which still maintained an optimist outlook to the radiant future.... I too, hope for yet more radiant times for Bai Lu.
