I thought I might repost my answer here to @AleksandraSucur about why there is a meaning to the blue yarn (why not red ?!) entangling Tang Qi when he first met Fang Jin, the other incarnation (filter) of Su Chengcheng. As a contribution about meanings in this delightful drama.
Yes there is a meaning for the colors. Usually, in c-dramas , a red string, or ribbon, etc, ties two lovers together as fated by the god of love. Sort of coded bond.
As for blue, sky blue as this yarn was... Technically, the complementary color of red is cyan, a light greenish blue color. But red contrasts well with blue. "Two things can be true. Contrast and complementary are opposites so uhhh...that makes perfect sense actually. "
The love for Su Miao from Tang Qi was straightforward, at first sight, so red. His feelings for Fang Jin next are more conflicted, so blue ... and the blues (!) are forecast subliminally through the yarn which was not red.
Besides which the sky blue, baby blue color, is entangling TQ in childish manner and thoughts literally and symbolically.
We could go on analyzing in many ways.
That shade of blue is not a traditional color on the Chinese symbolical palette, although it could be argued that it appears on white and blue porcelain which is both sturdy and breakable, or that it occurs on imperial clothing to remind of kingfisher blue, winged beings, apsaras, all far removed from the usual and normal human and earthly life. As removed as down to earth brown red blood logic and hormones that clash with lofty ideals and occult, fairy tale filters brought in by the witch who made the bangle (which looks technical through its computer like "updates" but is totally fantastic, out of this world, into the beyond the "blue event horizon". The 'event horizon' is the boundary defining the region of space around a black hole from which nothing (not even light) can escape; Beyond the Blue event horizon is the title of a classic science fiction novel. There is a blurring of lines between fantasy and science which can also lead back to the magic bangle... And it is surely not coincidence that the bangle dysfunctions and updates when it is stormy weather with lightning and thunderclaps. )
The scientist Fang Jin experimented color bonding on a mesh that Tang Qi's makeup company wished to buy the patent for. I might add that it is not so coincidental that, from the very start of their short story, Su Chengcheng under the filter of Fang Jin, severs the blue yarn that entangled Tang Qi: there is a symbolical meaning in this freeing him liberating him from the awkward bond · unwanted relationship · unappealing alliance · undesirable link.
Colors have a very big meaning in this drama, all the way to watching a rainbow and finding rainbow steps to go away, separate, sever the bonds. "Over the rainbow" is clearly a reference to the fever dream, fantastic story of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
I would add that the eye condition of Tang Qi is Tetrachromacy which "amplifies the eye's ability to distinguish between shades of colors. This creates a visual result that some might call “super vision.” Tetrachromacy is a rare genetic phenomenon that is believed to only affect females. Up to 12% of women worldwide may be tetrachromatic." another source stated : "Whilst data on prevalence is still somewhat uncertain, between 15-47% of women and around 8% of men, are potential tetrachromats. That is, they have four cones and a greater ability to perceive differences in colors — some tetrachromats may be able to distinguish two million shades of colors". But the percentage of proven male tetrachromats is uncertain, bordering impossibility and fantasy, so Tang Qi is as rare a person as a fantastical beast of China (thinking Qilin 麒麟 the Chinese unicorn, and associating it with "unicorn" concept for successful startups !)
The reference to the Wizard of Oz movie and fantasy universe also reappears when Tang Qi loses the ability to distinguish colors, like in the black and white moments contrasting with color world for him or for Dorothy stuck in unforgiving, hopeless mortal black and white world, where everyone believes there is only one shade of truth and wrong and one destiny.
SCC would have made a fab lawyer too, with QSTs reaction to the bracelet malfunction and TQ saw her face. It runs…

SCC is not a lawyer, she trained at sports and nothing intellectual. Her at first bullying sister is a lawyer, who had no qualms enlisting the filter sister to stand in for her client, causing her sister to fall into a new bucket of thistles when silly TQ got entangled in the blue (why not red???) yarn....
Yay for AvenueX for promoting this drama. I am hoping more viewers will go and enjoy it.
Has she now? That's refreshing. She was lukewarm to say the least when she was out of her Nezha2 cinema sampling in Shanghai, before she traveled back to Winnipeg. But sometimes she has a quirky sense of humor, so might have seen what makes this drama shine.
It's sad that the protagonist was thinking it's a sign he will go blind... what a nightmare. Also her sister dared…
You are looking at the wrong end of the picture. So you are blinded to the messages, and can't enjoy the humor, the cinematography, the acting... Maybe this is not for you : everybody does not have a sense of humor or the cultural references to appreciate this item. If you never liked the Looney Tunes, just forget Filter... Myself (and I'm not the only one) am having a whale of a time since this started: it has become my daily laughing pill, putting rainbow colors into this sad and hurtful world.
Omg I’ve only just started episode 1 and so far am loving it. It only came onto my radar now, I don’t even…
Filter did not get proper promotion, no hype, and there is no book at basis : it is an original script. So all who like it, like you and me, should not hesitate to spread word of mouth about it, to thank for the good times this is giving us. I mention it anywhere I can, these days, even to relatives who are not into c-dramas. Perhaps seeing my big grin and shiny eyes after episodes, they might talk about it and watch too, spread the love !
He is pretty new as the main director! From what I know, he used to be involved in this live-action magical girl…
Aha, MDL missed that! That was one which featured Zhao Jinmai as a child if I am not mistaken? Yep, back in 2013, kids stuff that got some attention on that market. Me, I once stumbled upon a short 5 mins episodes drama which I rather liked but did not include then in watch list because I thought it was "too silly", but now I am reconsidering and think I will rewatch it in a lull - if there is any in this delightful action-humor packed drama!
I think the message of the whole drama is learn to have a healthy dialogue to avoid misunderstandings.
one of the messages, certainly! Perhaps another one is : learn not to take everything too seriously, be prepared to laugh and to marvel at rainbows and pretty colors in this sad world !
he loved two/three people who aren't real and he is having a doubt that they were all SCC, you are telling me…
oh yes! so right ! I also thought TQ looked a bit like Droopy in the beginning, and I'm sure the tiptoeing tree was in one of the undying Looney Tunes cartoons !
Don't worry about Tang Qi, he is not a baby and has hidden resources too.
have you not reached ep21 yet? He vented by pinning the head of the manhua character to a dart board and viciously throwing a dart at the pictures jugular vein, looking slightly disappointed that it did not spray fake blood on the carpet. He's definitely not a poor guy but quite savage behind his glasses and basilisk stare 😂😂😂 The pair fit well together!
TQ's personality in general is very persistent once he has a goal in mind. Even these 2 episodes showed the difference…
Filter is such a fireworks of delight.
I am glad I don't just follow third party advice and herd like thinking, to go watch dramas : my way is randomly diving into a drama with an intriguing title, perhaps check who is playing but since I like (good) surprises, it does not mean that a familiar name will make me more biased to it over longer than opening episodes. Next, it just depends on how hooked I became.
No doubt Filter is now on my top favorite daily entertainment list!
You don't need to wait till Filter finishes airing : there are 21 good length episodes out already, fast paced, no annoying fillers, and 11 more to go, but probably a fast track in the next few days, so you could join the fun of reading and adding comments, on the Filter drama page, with the other "converts to entertainment" as it is ending if you catch up while not taking in too large bites (2-4 episodes a day is fine). There is a bit too much there to view it as a drama to binge in one go or, god forbid, to speed through at 2x or 3x. To relish it, just go along with the pace it has. Filter is not slow, nothing like the other shows on air which have long parts that one can skip through...
