Those are common characteristic traits within Japanese culture. Plus... There wouldn't be a plot if the characters’ s didn't have their idiosyncrasies and hurdles to overcome. The inner dialog which is often used in Japanese dramas, only further accentuates the characters' fears, conflicts, concerns, and joys to the audience. We're left in the person's head as a viewer. I don't see this method used as much elsewhere. Japanese people take extra consideration before speaking freely to people around them their deepest thoughts.

I am not saying someone should do so freely, at the same time, if someone is in a close relationship acts overly protective about their life partner seeing the content on the their phone, it's likely they are hiding something from them. GRANTED... It could plans for a surprise party, or work related content that is under lock and key legally....
In all honestly, in the world we live in, cell phones hide a person's true thoughts, or their inner and outer life, be it the good or their addiction, crimes, side relationships, or even hidden kids... It's not like this doesn't happen, internet is full of stories of people finding out their spouse or significant other has a double life. If a person has nothing to hid (outside of work), they won't make a big deal if their partner wants to look at their phone.
