I read somewhere from one of his interview that his character does that cuz it’s to help lighten the mood and it’s to hide his real feelings also. 🥲He’s in a state of depression, wanting to die but can’t so he resorts to it to hide his real emotions. I recall him cracking one when they first met YingLei and he called Baize Goddess useless or something and ZhuYan saw how WenXiao reacted. Then he made a joke quickly to distract/diffused the situation.

I love the ml. And to me it feels like the director and script writers really downplay his character a lot. Not just him, even the fl was thrown into the background and became a support character lol Even the support characters got more story plot than fl and ml.
Love how the two bicker, then ZYC gets happy when she shuts ZYZ down but then ZYC always slips when ZYZ shuts WX down too. Then with just a look from WX, ZYC immediately stops lol She knows how how to give that look and shut both down. 🤣
