Obsessions can literally drive you to your death. Anyway, I secretly hope the husband (Ahn Hyung San) gets a happy ending, although I know that even if they end up together, they can never truly be happy.
After watching the first episode and seeing the piano scenes, I immediately remembered Lee Sun-jae (Yoo Ah-in) playing the piano in Secret Love Affair. The storylines will be completely different, but there’s one thing they have in common: the male lead is incredibly talented at playing the piano, comes from a poor background, and receives a scholarship—just like in Secret Love Affair.
I think actress Kim Jung Nan might be part of the cast because I saw a coffee truck sent to the filming set to support her for the drama. I came across the post on Instagram from “woulducoffee”. Let’s see what role she’ll take on. I liked her in Sky Castle, Queen of Tears and Buried Hearts, so I’m excited to see her in this one.
I rewatched this after hearing the news of director Ahn Pan-seok’s passing, who created this masterpiece. Kim Hee-ae as Oh Hye-won and Yoo Ah-in as Lee Sun-jae feel almost impossible to replace. Their chemistry isn’t just romantic—it’s the tension, restraint, glances, silence, and emotional intensity that make every scene feel charged. 😭 And Yoo Ah-in’s Lee Sun-jae was PERFECT because he could make Sun-jae feel both young and innocent while still having this incredibly intense confidence when it came to Hye-won. Kim Hee-ae was equally perfect as Hye-won—so controlled and sophisticated on the outside, but you can literally watch her slowly lose control emotionally. Honestly, the casting is the chemistry. I can’t imagine another pair making those characters feel the same way. 🥹
Nothing new for JTBC with dramas like Secret Love Affair in the past. There will always be those who don't like…
Oh yes, Secret Love Affair was a masterpiece and a huge success in its time. This drama has an even bigger age gap, so I’m curious to see how audiences will receive it, since I’ve seen mixed reactions since the casting announcement. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the chemistry between the leads. If they can deliver the same level of depth and chemistry as Secret Love Affair, I think it could turn out to be something really special.
It’s a bit worrying that this drama will be airing on a cable channel like JTBC in Korea, especially after seeing how strongly some Korean audiences reacted to the 30-year age-gap kissing scene in Netflix kdrama “Notes from the Last Row”. I’m also curious to see how the ratings will turn out. These days, I think anything over 10% is considered a success for a cable drama in Korea. Let’s see how it goes.
