In my opinion it comes down to this being a melodrama. Sad stories tend to be judged lower than happy ones. However, it was at the top for two months.

I recommend to watch ‘Born To Run’ (BTR). BTR is all about two mothers and two daughters and their problems with each other. It is a must see and got plenty of awards. Yang Chaoyue is playing a conflicted and oppressed daughter, very different character to her cheerful one in ‘Ideal City’.

‘Being towards death’ has been released May first (2026) in China. In pre-screenings it received rave reviews. According to audience records, the movie, which treats terminal illness with comedy, strengthens the will to live. The movie dares one to face questions about life, death, and cancer. If you track down a screening outside China (none found in the US, there were a few in Australia and perhaps elsewhere), go watch it. I wish I could very much. The story, writing and acting is exceptional, but the subject is not persuasive enough to a broader audience, leaving the box office a little bit wanting. Hope that over time more people can enjoy this wonderful work.

Be prepared that this is a drama about being good hearted, naive, but having an unsurmountable prejudice against you. Even though it is a melodrama, it was #1 for 60 days in 2023. Thus, submerge into the tearful and at times difficult to watch abuse of an innocent girl beautifully played by Yang Chaoyue, the shortcomings of a slightly too correct old master, the suffering of a rejected man and irrationality of self rightious immortals.
the presentation is beautiful, the subject difficult, but difficult is good: difficult is art!

most people say the ending could have been a bit longer. but its not good to say more. watch the whole show, enjoy, and find out.
