Lol I know some people already had mobile phones but the majority of people didn't. Got my first one when I was in my first year of high school... That was... in 2001 if I'm not mistaken and even then, it wasn't that widespread.

There's ONE trope that I wish K dramas would stop doing: Please. I'm tired of the phone not working, no power left nonsense. Keep a fudging power bank in your bag. It's not that expensive, you can buy one for less than $30.

These phones are never working when you need them to. Or set your fudging story in the early 90s, back then phones were only at home so it made sense that you wouldn't be able to pick them up if you were elsewhere.

I find this particular trope even more annoying than the truck of doom.

The spidey sense: Well you have a point here. I myself have forgotten it. Maybe it only works on physical danger and not the other type?

For the second point... I've answered you below in your previous comment.

Been debating all day if I should comment but I keep coming back here so I'm just gonna spit it out:First, I want…
Agree with your comment except for the comments about the length. Honestly I'm glad there's no longer any standard so to speak.

A long time ago, that was either 16 episodes for weekly dramas and 50 episodes for weekenders... (I know some series were 24 episodes or 30 even... Or talking about Jumong up to 80 episodes but I'm gonna focus on the generality).

Often you could feel the length but one also has to mention that episodes were shorter on average i.e back in the early 2000s, 55 to 1h on average with exceptionally, episodes going up to 1h 20 min for their first or finale.

Now episodes are longer... So having less episodes doesn't necessarily mean we're losing that much in terms of length.

It seems we've moved to a standard 12 episodes for most shows... but again longer episodes. Let's say the episodes are 1h15mn ... That's 20 minutes longer than the average length of the early 2000s so basically 3 episodes today would be the equivalent of 4 episodes back then... So 16 episodes back in the early 2000s would be the equivalent of 12 episodes today.

Not much of a change... The issue is more in the pacing. I've personally mentioned it a lot but I wish K dramas did like C dramas and went down to 40/45 mn per episodes. They have longer series in terms of episodes... and in terms of overall length, C dramas tend to be longer, yet it doesn't feel that long when watching.

The perception of time as far as I'm concerned is biased based on the length of the episodes. The angst feels overly long and dragged because instead of being dispatched in small doses through 3 separate episodes, you get more than 2 hours of suffering which is tedious. If you get 3 episodes mostly angsty but with a couple of light hearted scenes, it makes the whole thing more bearable because the length doesn't allow the angst to be overwhelming... When you condense everything in two episodes though, even if the number of light hearted scenes and angst is the same, the way you feel as a viewer is different, it feels like there's way more angst even if it's not necessarily the case.

To finish, this drama is 14 episodes... which means they haven't "forced" themselves to stick to the 12 episodes current average... as far as I'm concerned, it means they've made sure they have time to properly tell their story...

Also let's not forget that the final episode also has the option to be slightly longer than the others if needs be.

We can't know if this drama is too short until next week... but I'm gonna trust the writers.

u wrote alot - read only the 2nd point so far and wanted to respond -- the issue most ppl hv i think and with…
Nah Se gye is fighting... They've hinted at it when we see him being questioned at the police station. He's hinted that somebody is behind his misfortune and proposed a deal with the policeman... We've never seen the aftermath of that. Also, a couple of episodes again while talking with his secretary they mentioned the fact that they're gathering evidence but that now wasn't the right time to use them or that they didn't enough at the moment. Just like the grandpa... He's been doing his own thing... The drama has hinted at it but hasn't shown anything concrete yet. This is probably going to happen next week though I think we would have been less frustrated even we knew a bit more about what Se Gye and the GrandPa have been doing in the shadows.

Also, better be prepared and let your enemy think he's won so that he let down his guard and leaves you more incriminating evidences than fight out-front and miss the "surprise effect" just saying'

Doesn't mean I enjoyed episode 12 but I can see the writer's logic behind.

I understand the last two episodes were frustrating but err... you know it's 14 episodes? Everybody's reacting like this drama now sucks erasing all the weeks with great written episodes and claiming the drama has gone to sheep when there's still 2 episodes left. Also as frustrating as it is, there's something called " payoff", you need to go down, in order to go up. Without a bit of frustration, there won't be relief and joy at the victory against the villain or at wha's gonna happen with the whole reincarnation thing.

I don't mind people throwing this drama under the bus but let's wait for the ending shall we?

This might be a stupid question, but I'm genuinely curious about the title My Royal Nemesis.Who exactly does the…
Actually I don't think you should bother with the English title. The title 멋진 신세계 means literally " Wonderful New World" - Meochin ShinSegye

It plays with both Se Gye's name " World" and Seo Ri's last name " Shin" which means new.

These puns are lost in translation. I doubt you should bother with the English title.

I'm sorry. Still 100% sure the Grandpa is faking it. He's just realized Mun Do is way more ruthless than he thought so he's probably paid his doctor to pretend he's got memory loss.

Even being 100% sure, I'm still annoyed.

I know that you do need drama in a drama but I'm getting a bit tired of all the angst. Arguably, last week wasn't that terrible... sure there was some dramatic moments, but overall it was pretty sweet. This week though the balance is way more into the angst with very little sweetness.. and that sheepy preview...

This was putting a smile on my face every week... now I'm just glad my week is so busy I don't have time to get impatient until the next episode comes out.

Hopefully they do a Lovely Runner and AT LEAST episode 14 is gonna be 100% silly and sweet except for the first 5 minutes. I'm still liking the show, but I do feel they haven't managed to balance the silly/sweet moments with the angst properly since episode 11. We do need the drama to get a resolution but somehow the switch in tone is so drastic that it does feel like being "slapped by reality" as a viewer.

The antagonists are annoying but the drama gives them so little screentime overall that I don't get overly annoyed. Still I hope we get rid of all the angst and drama tomorrow. There's plenty to cover next week with the whole soul/swapping reincarnation stuffs so let's not add more Mundo on top. That would be him overstaying his welcome.

Well I said it since day one: The Grandpa was just faking it with Mundo. He knew that guy was no good. If Mundo has tried to win him over without trying to ruin Se Gye, he might have had a chance but sadly, Mundo showed his true color as soon as he arrived in their house so the Grandpa used him to "build Se Gye's character". Typical.

Honest I forced myself to finish it... Your comment reminded me I was pretty generous when I rated it... Have to rate that one down from 6.5 to 5.

I personally have tried another C drama romance after that one but still no luck. Always the same issue... In fact I would argue this one is on the better end of the spectrum... I have watched only one C Drama thriller... BUT I can definitely say 1000% that C Dramas are great for historicals and Fantasy but their modern romances are 90% miss, 10% hits.

Not worth your time in my opinion... If you still want to stick to a C drama romance though, just beware of MDL ratings, they're definitely overblown due to the fanmob. I thought that was only the case with K dramas... but it's actually way worse with C dramas.

Yeah well. I get it the USA is not biggest soccer nation in the world. From an international point of view though, given this is the most popular competition in the world, as much as the Olympics if not more, what is happening is truly heartbreaking on all fronts, whether its about the ridiculous pricing of the tickets or the treatment of foreigners whether fans, players or referees.

But I won't go on a rant here, even talking about it pisses me off. I'm just gonna pretend there's no World Cup this year ( also that World Cup song... just NO). Hopefully it will be better in 2030. Hopefully.

Ok thanks for the info. I've boycotting the World Cup. Honestly disgusting on all fronts. I wish my country had boycotted it... But sadly, probably too much money involved.

So I've been refreshing SBS Drama Youtube page since yesterday and no "pre-release" scene there even now... Usually the pre-release scene should already be available on youtube...

Is there NO pre-release this week or does any of you have managed to see it somewhere else?

Episode 11 synopsis:"Going back to Joseon? After learning of her fate to return, Seori prepares her final…
I'm team reincarnation WITH a dab of time travel/soul swapping.

1. Reincarnation because obviously Seo Ri and Se Gye are the reincarnation of Dan Shim and the Grand Prince.

2. Time travel/Soul swapping because the show has HEAVILY insisted on the comet since day 1. If it was just reincarnation, there would be no need for a trigger. The comet makes their modern souls dormant until it passes. Se Gye isn't touched by this issue due to meds he's been taking. Again. It's never explained why he goes to the psychiatrist but there's a couple of scenes where his doctor friend asks him about his sleep. This doesn't come out of nowhere. Typical foreshadowing from any writer.

There's lots of hints so that you're not surprised when the explanations are given yet not enough to be sure 100%.

Also, somebody has sent me in a DM a theory regarding the paintings we see in the museum. According to a Chinese viewer the Queen is indeed Dan Shim. She did become Queen and hence she obviously did paint the flowers. Dan Shim just doesn't think it's her because she travelled in the future ( due to the comet) before she became Queen. For the half burnt painting, I rewatched the scene... They never mentioned the identity of Dan Shim in the painting. They call it "Portrait of a Beauty" but whether she's a concubine or the consort is never mentionned... So that theory still holds.

Honestly I've noticed it in every single show that doesn't happen in high school for the past 2/3 years... I can't say for most of their shows though. But it's already way too much in my opinion.

Title Round One
I detest smoking irl but it does look cool on screen for whatever reason. Ideally, boxers shouldn't smoke, but…
That's exactly the problem ,it looks cool for some reason because that's the narrative pushed by the industry since the 50s when they already knew they were selling death.

Just like showing that drinking is cool and hot, when actually there's nothing hot about a beer belly or vomiting everywhere or having a malfunctioning kidney. People in cities tend to be more educated on the subject but these TV series are aired everywhere. Couple of years ago, I came across this documentary showing a man in the northern countryside in Thailand having fun with his four year old girl smoking. Everybody was laughing as if it was just not a problem. Except that toddler was already addicted. She would throw a tantrum if she didn't get her cigarette. She's probably dead now given it was at least 5 or 6 years ago.

Part of my family is from Madagascar, the same issue happens there. Alcoholism is rampant everywhere and everybody is smoking because they don't see how damaging smoking is. Even if you try to explain, they just don't get it. If there's no protective action from the government and education in school, it's just impossible to fight against this image that is promoted through popular series.

And these companies know where to lobby to make sure the legislation doesn't change in these countries. But again I'm never happy so what can I say?

I've never been a fan of GMMTV's abusive PPL but I've noticed they've been pushing the smoking a lot these past few years. I wish they went back to promoting ice tea. It's still too much sugar but at least fat doesn't kill half its consumers and you can always work on a better diet. When your lungs are gone though, they're gone. You're not gonna get back the years lost on this stupid addiction sadly.

And there's reactions like the above comment, which I don't even want to bother with. Typical. As if you're attacking their favorite actor when you're just stating the fact that something is dangerous and abnormal. Easy for you to deny the consequences when you're not the one suffering from them. How many years did rich countries take to educate people on this poison? Our health systems are still suffering the consequences. I'm not that old and I remember we could smoke inside our school when I was in middle school.

Thank God, not everyone is like that. Otherwise we would still get buried under that smoke in every public places in the name of "freedom".

Title Round One
Sigh... I'm starting to miss the days when GMMTV was just PPLing soft drinks, noodles and sweets. They're pushing their main actors to smoke in all their dramas now. You can literally see the tactics the tobacco industry has been riding on for years i.e making smoking look cool to the youth because of course, in rich countries, they can no longer sell as much poison. Laws are way more restrictive regarding the promotion of this industry of death.

And yes the brand is not shown but we all know they're all in on it. There's been plenty of books/documentaries and movies on the subject. The idea is to push an image.
Smoking is hot. Smoking makes you look cool.
The trailer features a professional boxer who smokes... WTF?

Nope smoking is not cool, and you're not gonna look as hot as these actors who are just doing it by obligation. First off, only smokers aren't bothered by the terrible smell and on top of losing part of your sense of taste, you're going to damage your gums and teeth on the long run... and let's not talk about lung cancer and other health complications... as well as the sheer financial costs to buy this sheep... and the additional costs that will come from said health issues.

But hey! As long as GMMTV is making big bucks. Who cares?
