It was a commercial success, keeping high popularity and strong viewership throughout its entire run. Cheng Yi’s…
These are the numbers from when it aired, which I followed at the time. If you care that much, go check for yourself, okay? And you know, ''definitely a huge hit in China'' and ''it wasn't the most popular drama of the year'' don’t cancel each other out — something can be really successful during its airing without being the top drama of the year.
At no point did I say it was the most popular drama of the year, just that it did well in China. I didn’t lie, and yeah, you clearly don’t get what I’m talking about.
Not liking the drama (the second part really was bad) is one thing, making up that it flopped is another. 🙄

Oh my... If you don’t know what Maoyan, Lighthouse, or advertising stats mean, it’s clear you didn’t understand what I was talking about or where I got the info from.
Those numbers here don’t matter to the Chinese audience, only what counts there.
And I never said it was the most popular drama of the year, I thought it was implied that I was talking about the time it aired.

I didn’t lie, the data’s from Maoyan and Lighthouse, plus the popularity rankings released by iQIYI and the advertising stats. Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean it flopped in China. And popularity doesn’t mean it’s a good drama, it just means it got tons of views and made money, even with all the criticism.

I am seriously wondering when will Cheng Yi stop taking projects that have sad endings? This is his 3rd drama…
Only three?? I know of at least FIVE 😭

Lol the rating keep going down just like the journey of legend 😭Poor Cheng yi 😭
The Journey of Legend I feel bad for its 7.9 because it’s actually good, but this one I can’t say I’m surprised, given the way the writing went in the second half.

The drama started off really well — the first twelve episodes were engaging and full of energy. But then, it…
Honestly I think he’s safe. He’s not typecast beyond that he tends to play principled leads who suffer a lot and end up dead or with bittersweet open endings and who slay in long hair and hanfu.

But the characters are basically all so different aside from that when it comes to personality and motivations and feelings that they’re differentiated completely in my head, there’s no way I’d mix up Sifeng with Fugui or with Qi Yan or with LLH or XQS.

I think he’s also safe from his career being affected by this. At the end of the day, investors invest for a reason, if it’s CY as the lead I can’t be the only person who will definitely check out at least 1 episode to see if it’s good and that’s usually as long as he needs to hook me and keep me around to the end.

Just hope he never works with this team of writers ever again, and I certainly won’t be touching anything done by this producer either.

The drama started off really well — the first twelve episodes were engaging and full of energy. But then, it suddenly dropped in quality, mainly because Cheng Yi and Li Yitong were pushed into what felt like second or even third-lead roles. The last two or three episodes picked up again, matching the rhythm and beauty of the beginning, though they were quite predictable.

Lately, it feels like Cheng Yi is being used just to promote other actors, and that’s unfair to him — because all the flaws of the drama end up being blamed on him when it’s not his fault at all.

From most of the comments, it’s clear there was no real romance between the main leads — only mutual respect. So instead of calling it a romance drama, they should’ve labeled it a story of teacher-disciple respect! That way, viewers would have known what to expect.

I’m a fan of Cheng Yi and truly admire his acting, but I feel he’s stuck in a repetitive cycle of similar storylines. In at least three dramas, we’ve seen two versions of the same character — and as always, the moment we see his name, we already know he’s going to die at the end.

If this drama had focused more on the two main characters instead of scattering attention across side plots, it could have been wonderful. Or if it had more episodes — maybe split into two seasons — the sub-stories would’ve made more sense.

As a fan, I just hope we won’t see a drop in his future drama ratings, because with his acting talent, he truly doesn’t deserve that.

It is sad to see 7.9 😢
Cheng Yi = 10
Spider siblings arc = 1
Overrated romance scenes for the supporting characters = 5
I wish MDL has separate rating for dramas and characters because Cheng Yi does not deserve this.

PS. Wangquan Fugui is still leading the most popular character on Vlinkage and Maoyan's latest update❣️
