There’s a lot a risk factors.will the writer be able to pull of an interesting storyline with good pacing? Is…
As a fan who became his after a great performance in TRS, I want to see such a layered and complex performance from him again. I know what he can do as an actor after TRS, Rain or Shine and Good Manager.

The red sleeve is exhausting, so I understand he wanted to play such a breezy charming chaebol character in King the land because he had never played such a guy before.

He wants to be a good actor, so he tries to choose different roles. But with current K drama scripts lately, all characters after the red sleeve are green flags without much character depth which becomes repetitive in my opinion.
I am excited for Veteran 3 for a change, but unfortunately, the production is postponed due to director's health.

It doesn't help when the plots have no clear direction in his last two dramas.
TF had a great potential and a promising first half but the writer was obsessed with that one villain and hero had to deal with him over realistic IMF issues again & again.
Cashero doesn't have proper rules for superpower except that the hero team has limited resources. And they are supposed to lose till the grand finale. It becomes annoying.

I really hope his character in this drama is really interesting and layered for a change. And the plot to have consistency and a quality script.

I followed the series LIVE when it was airing. I watched 'Yi San: Wind of the Palace' on our national TV years…
I wrote this because everytime there are crickets about this drama on X after 5 years, ppl talking about this issue rarely know what happened in recorded history books, original source novel, production that time or about nominations for this drama.
Only Jumped on bandwagon with a hot magical word on X lately.

Among the comments, when the drama aired live, the complaints were towards the female lead, and lately towards the male lead. I do understand this is one of the dramas with divided opinions among audience. Everybody can form their own opinions regarding characters.

And I just simply present mine based on what I know and my watch sequence. I love this drama.I used to defend FL in 1-2 years after airing and now the male lead because I understand and sympathize with both characters.

I love the drama and both actors. When the drama got 7 nominations at Baeksang,I was very happy. Best Actor,Best Actress,Best Supporting actor & Actress, Best Drama, Best Director plus 1 Technical nomination.

I still believe the drama's biggest contributions should go to to Diector Jung. Both leading actors were great but not only theirs but also the entire acting team.

Lee Junho deserved his Baeksang. Lee Seyoung was unfortunate to lose hers to Kim Taeri ( for Twenty five Twenty one) in spite of her nomination. Both actors, supporting actors and director got nominations but it was a tight year with 25 21, DP and Squid Game.

Commercially, both leading actors were successful that year, but Junho had a slightly more advantageous because he had already gone viral with 'My House' fancam as Woori Jib Junho before the drama. (The song Kim Ji Won sang & dance at her fanmeeting after Queen of Tears).

(Look at the dates)

https://youtu.be/peLS1PAZyuc?si=0A0rg7eGDDPevSCA

Female lead and drama fans had misconception that Junho had 100x more successful after TRS because of the drama yet she didn't attain the same status as he did.
But his multiple CFs in 2021 were already before the drama because of 'My House' viral fancam. In short, they both got their fruits but Junho seemed to get more because he had viral success as an idol as well as a hit drama.

The drama wasn't on Netflix so internationally, the drama didn't elevate both that much. For Lee Junho, the follow up drama 'King The Land' who simultaneously aired on Netflix did.

Another thing to add is the production condition before this series aired. Initial cast were Park Hye Soo and Kim Kyung Nam . KKN was the breakout star of 'King: Eternal Monarch'.

There is the original work called 'Red Sleeve Cuff' novel by author KMG in which Deok Im is the centre character.

I didn't know whether the problem was the production didn't want to invest on a drama where FL was the centre character with ML character as famous as well-respected King Jeongjo of Joseon or the drama original FL cast Park Hye Soo's scandal that time.

The production halted.

Both initial casts moved on.

After a few months, the wheel ran again with new casts, Lee Junho and Lee Seyoung. The plot may be revised from initial arrangement with the new cast. Junho was viral domestically with his fancam before the drama. They couldn't have him as the 1st biller of the drama just to give him a character nothing to work with. The novel might revolve around the female lead. But the drama was about both,Crown Prince Yi San and Deok Im.

In 2021, MBC was struggling with ratings. It had the worst ratings among the public TV channels, KBS, MBC and SBS.A list names didn't want to work with MBC.

At that time ,neither Lee Junho nor Lee Seyoung were internationally well known big names. They might have their own cult of fans. Junho was an idol with lots of Japanese fans, some fans from his dramas 'Just Between Lovers' 'Good Manager' and 'Wok of Love'. And Lee Seyoung with 'Hwayugi, Doctor John, Memorist and Crowned Clown' . But I doubt they could be called big names in acting industry, especially in international market.
I can bet that MBC aimed for domestic rating success. King Jeongjo along with King Sejong were two of the well-respected Kings for their good reign in Joseon Dynasty. They couldn't have him as a side character in their first comback historical drama.

MBC was hopeful. The Red Sleeve was their first historical drama in years, but they were not that optimistic either. Not to mention, the drama aired on the same time with industry big names' comeback dramas like Song Hye Ko's (Now We are Breaking Up) and Han Hoo Joo's (Happiness).

The red sleeve director Jung Ji In suggested 20 episodes drama but MBC rejected the idea by saying 'Who watched 20 episodes drama these days?'

Only when the drama aired, the drama hit the jackpot. Both commercially (rating 17.6%) and critically acclaimed. They extended it to 1 episode.

This is the content created from Lady Hyegyeong's memoir (San's mother)
https://youtu.be/N2MSn8w7oQo?si=uZTqjm3-qhuqNLBb
Because I watched 'Yi San:Wind of The Palace' first and watched many K dramas and C palace dramas, I don't necessarily perceive ‌all women as poor & weak in ancient times. It is in ancient times, of course it was male dominated in nature. But women could be as calculating as men to grab power in their hands.Because Crown Prince King had with Lady Seong (Deok Im) died and it took a long time for King Jeongjo to take a new concubine after her death, his new heir was quite young when King Jeongjo passed away. It was Queen Dowager Jeongsun (his grandpa's queen in TRS) who took control of Royal Power in her hands with the help of Noron Faction after Jeongjo's death and corrupted the country . She may have said 'The palace is a golden prison with four walls' in the series, but in history, she was hungry with power.

TRS is a series after all. Some facts are exaggerated and some are toned down for the viewers.

Historical accuracy is between TRS and Yi San: Wind of the Palace.
Deok Im, Lady Seong being a court lady is more accurate in TRS. But in history, she wasn't Yi San's court lady, but his mother.
But I think the reason for Lady Seong's rejections to King Jeongjo advance weren't so accurate in both dramas. Historically, both times, he was official with a consort recently. The first time with Queen Hyoui and second time with Hwabin. So Lady Seong didn't want to make things complicated.
It wasn't that she loved freedom like Seong Deokim did in TRS or his mom,Lady Hyegyeong didn't approve of their relationship in Yi San:Wind of the palace.

It was more like Yi San mom heard her son's temper tantarum towards a court lady's maid and she talked to Deok Im. This was how DI became a concubine.
But Lady Seong had a good relationship with Yi San's Queen Hyoui (whom didn't get featured in the red sleeve because of limited time) like in Yi San: Queen of the Palace. DI wasn't alone like TRS portrayed. She was a friend of the Queen and very helpful to Yi San in his court matters like Yi San: Wind of The Palace.

I followed the series LIVE when it was airing.
I watched 'Yi San: Wind of the Palace' on our national TV years ago.
In 2016 , I became a fan of Yoo Ah In through his Baeksang award winning performance in 'Six Flying Dragons'. After this, I watched his performance in 'Sado/The Throne'.
(CP Sado was Yi San's father.)
In Sado, I was thoroughly impressed by Yoo Ah In's performance as well as the child actor who played young Yi San.
I learnt about Yi San/King Jeongjo leadership through the dramas 'Yi San: Wind of the Palace' 'Sungkyankwan scandal' and his childhood story 'The Throne'. I had less info about his relationship with Lady Seong before TRS.

Before TRS, though my curiosity was piqued, I wasn't interested in checking out TRS at first because initial casting were Park Hye Soo and Kim Kyung Nam whom I wasn't familiar with.
(https://koalasplayground.com/2021/05/08/junho-lee-se-young-and-jang-hee-jin-in-talks-for-mbc-sageuk-drama-the-red-sleeve-cuff-adapted-from-same-name-novel/) - check coments

But, casting changed later to LSY and LJH. At that time, I watched Kairos just before TRS aired. So, I ended up checking out TRS because of FL,LSY. I didn't know Lee Junho at that time (Well,I had prejudice against him because he was an idol actor.)

The reason TRS caught my interest in earlier episodes was the way they wrote Yi San. He was a direct continuation of 'The Throne' child Yi San character. The yearning of his father, Resentment and Love for his Grandpa who protected him as well as killed his father.

King Jeongjo might be a Joseon King. But I am emotionally connected to him because he was so similar to our democratic leader [Who is a female] with a tragic family history yet a great leader to People. Her father was a leader who brought our country's Independence yet assassinated just before our Independence day. Our current day Juntas drove her family to overseas because thet wanted to take power in their hands. She grew up overseas and had a family with a man. She could choose to live comfortably with her family, yet she chose us over her family to give us democracy. She was separated from her husband, her children and unfairly prisoned just to try giving us democracy.

King Jeongjo's tragic family history & his choice to prioritize his country over his own family in 'The red Sleeve' stirred a familiar emotion in me while watching this drama.

The Red Sleeve, both male & female characters are their own person before their budding romance.

Personally, I finished this story & loved the drama for Yi San. His sacrifice to prioritize his country over his desire touched me.

Unlike our leader,Jeongjo lived in 17 century.

Because King Jeongjo is still hailed as a Great King even in modern day, most dramas portray him as a good leader. TRS was adapted from a novel which was written from a court lady POV , so I could also see him as a man of his time.

My view isn't entirely changed, he was still a great leader, but not necessarily a good man for everybody.

Lee Junho brought out both good & dark aspects of the character, reflecting loneliness as well as selfish desires of a King. A character as human as possible on screen. The good parts as well as the bad of a human. I had prejudice of him as an idol before, but after finishing the drama, he became one of my fav.

Title The Red Sleeve Spoiler
Fans reaction to TRS is like when a beloved celebrity couple divorced.Fans either hate male or female for breaking…
The dramas have either softened or dramatized characters for the sake of plot over the years. In SFD, Bang Won started as a youth who wanted 'Justice' for people instead of a bloodthirsty royal. In Moonlight drawn by clouds, in history, Crown prince was killed ,but this was omitted in the drama. In Bon Appetit your Majesty, real king was notorious as a cruel ruler who violated thousands of women. Of course, the red sleeve also softened the male lead's character for modern view. But not enough because they wanted to write a tragic court romance due to class differences. Director Jung Ji In had a vision to have a drama of 20 episodes, but that time, MBC was struggling with poor rating. MBC said who watched 20 episodes drama these days. So they made it into 16 episodes drama, but due to popularity, they later extended it to 17 episodes, but the plot was rushed in final 2, entirely omitting their marriage arc in the novel. The tragedy was due to their class differences. The drama was promoted as a court romance. I still see as the court romance. It is neither the King's fault nor Deok Im's fault for the tragedy. They are individuals more than their love. San prioritized his country over his life. Whether he had to endure multiple abuses by his grandfather or assassinations for the position, in the end, it was for the sake of the country. Even if her life was threatened or her friend was in danger, he wouldn't break the rules because he couldn't be a ruler who broke the rules first. Not only for DI,he couldn't break the rules for his half brother or for his friend. Why audience expect him to break the rules for the female lead. For romantic purpose ? People rarely understand Deok Im's character. They are in the same position as San, yet they criticize his character. She chose to stay because she loved him, not because he forced her to stay in the palace. He gave her a choice. The King's enemy Noron faction /aka Queen Dowager had already used her to bring her brother back to Capital. Deok Im's the King weakness. And he couldn't protect her by risking his country. So he gave her a choice, stayed by his side as a consort or or left the country & never come back. And she couldn't leave the King & lived that far away from him. Like she said 'she wouldn't run away if she didn't love him'. She made a choice. And why San can't understand her love. Because she never admitted her feelings. It was another tragedy of their class differences. She was not only his spouse but also his servant. They had a master servant relationship in addition to their love life. Is it loyalty or love ? He would never be sure. We are sure because we are 3rd person in their story and we live in the future, knowing history. For Deok Im, the king's love was not permanent because he was a powerful king who could discard her anytime. For San, because she never admitted her feelings, he would never be sure that he was her love or just her master who had control over her life.
If they were only San & Deok Im, you can feel their sincere love. His wish was to see her face for the last time in life & death situation and her wish was to save him at the cost of her death. They could give life for each other but what separated them was nothing but the class.

The girl used to be prideful in her position as a court lady, bragging she would be the 5th rank head court lady in the future like it would be the highest achievement.
But once the position she took pride in, was so little compared to the position of the man she loved who was a King.
I don't know anyone else.
If it were me, it is going to hurt like hell to be in a situation like this.

Fans reaction to TRS is like when a beloved celebrity couple divorced.Fans either hate male or female for breaking their bubble over accepting the fact that they are humans. 'Divorce' is part of the human relationships. 'Happily ever after' is not always.
History discussed ,but there may be spoilers below.

Dramas always have been exaggerating the facts. This drama was promoted as sad court romance because Lady Seong died in history. Historically Lady Seong Refused Jeongjo for another reason (for both times, he was recently married to another consort, first with Queen Hyoui & second time with Hwabin.https://thetalkingcupboard.com/2021/12/31/the-red-sleeve-history-her-story-and-their-love-story/ Second time, Jeongjo was angry ,but he didn't want to punish her and ended up punishing her maid (there was not clarification what punishment was, whether a light or heavy one) . Jeongjo mother heard about her son's unusual punishment (because Jeongjo usually disliked court ladies due to his father Sado who ended up taking a lot of court ladies as concubines and hurt his mom). Because Lady Seong was like Jeongjo's mom/Lady Hyegyeong adopted daughter, his mom act as a medium for their union. Lady Seong's relationship with Jeongjo's Queen was quite good unlike in the drama which painted Deok Im as alone .She was loved in the Harem (had a good relationship with Jeongjo's other consorts) . It was quite unfortunate that she lost one child after another, the young Crown Prince eventually. Her death wasn't clarified. Due to sadness in her heart over losing her child or physical illness.

Does it need to be for every drama about two boys the genre of BL? The answer is NO. From May Queen, Baker King KTG, Can you hear my heart, Equator's man to School 2013, Bridal Mask and Impossible heir, there were a lot of dramas about boys and men's friendship rivalaries coming out of South Korea previously. There are a lot of BL K dramas every year. So, why there is a need to be obsessed with a k drama not being a BL when it doesn't want to be one!

Friendship are also beautiful as much as love and it can happen between males as well as a male and a female.

My review is that the love story is quite giddy like 2010 dramas. But losing her identity & the background gangster arc are quite stupid in some areas. But ML, FL (Ha Young) I like her a lot. And S.E.S ajummas are charming. It is 8/10 drama for me overall.

Unpopular opinion: Jun-ho is picking fine scripts, audiences are just becoming more nitpicky about everything…
If the red sleeve airs this year, I highly doubt it will get the current rating or rating back then (8.9) because as soon as yi san and deok im library scene happens, a lot of 1 rating is going to happen. This was what happened to TF in GMJ episode. Current mydramalist population can't stand a single negativity . People don't have patience for story. What they want is ready made hero from ep.1.
Cdrama - XX competent male lead falls in love with XX competent female lead. The story is two of them flirting over the course of story.
Kdrama- XX competent doctor, XX competent lawyer from the start . The story of restart button because of some reason, they have all the skills ready.

Junho went against this trend in typhoon family & cashero. This is why. He should follow the trend setting drama fans love so much instead of underdog stories.

Yeah I really don't understand the rating on this one
This year has a lot of good dramas. It is just that people only wants to follow Tiktok popular dramas.
1. Our Unwritten Seoul
2. Law and the City
3. You & Everything Else
4. Dear Hongrang
5.Way Back Love
6. Light Shop
7. As you stood by
8. The Price of Confession are variety of great watches across the genres. And there are more that may not perfect, but still enjoyed by a lot of fans. It is just that viewers these days are harsh or they are easily irritated by every little thing these days.

Yeah, previously I take a reference from mydramalist whether I should watch a drama or not ,but lately a lot overwhelmed by negative reviews only. Personally, mydramalist becomes extremely unreliable & toxic place for rating. Except certain dramas , almost everything has been trashed.
No more reply to you because no point in talking to an individual who has a different opinion from you. Have a good day.

Yeah I really don't understand the rating on this one
I am not talking about this drama. All K dramas & movies in general.

Yeah lately, nearly every K drama getting that. Even 1 year ago, any K drama or K movie were hardly getting a rating under 8. Recent almost all K projects get mediocre rating which is quite strange for me.(Previously, 8.2 to 8.5 for average K drama which are not perfect)
For example, I love the great flood so much and it is doing well on Netflix, but do you see its rating ?
What I mean is overall rating . I have my own rating system & I have my own favorites , of course. But overall K drama rarely got under 8. Now everytime one has a negative thing ppl don't like, a trash rating 1/10 is immediately given by a few.
