Six Episodes of Doubt, Then It Clicked: A Romance That Won Me Over
I had a difficult time getting through the first six episodes. I usually love offbeat and exaggerated satire, but the stylized deliveries and constant misunderstandings just weren’t my cup of tea. I’m not sure if it would have worked better with a different lead, but something about the execution didn’t quite land for me. Still, I had a feeling the underlying storyline would eventually shine through—and I’m glad I stuck with it, because it ended up becoming one of my favorites.It’s not quite top-shelf for me, as those six rough episodes are hard to ignore, and the plot occasionally relied on convenient or hard-to-believe twists that separated the main characters one too many times. Even so, it was a drama I couldn’t pull myself away from, and it made for an easy, comforting watch while I was stuck at home recovering from a terrible cold.
The cinematography was beautiful, and the themes reflected many of the elements I love in Chinese dramas. I found myself connecting with both major and minor characters, and the villains were especially compelling—complex, morally gray, and backed by layered stories that made it difficult to truly despise them, even after witnessing the harm they caused. I also appreciated the character dynamics, the steady plot growth, and the overall narrative arc. While I don’t always enjoy the style of romance often found in popular Chinese dramas, this one suited my tastes perfectly. I absolutely loved the main couple and their relationship.
Overall, this was a win for me.

Hidden Identities and Palace Betrayal
I consider this drama a hidden gem because not many people were talking about it when it released, and it’s still one I rarely see recommended. Some people feel microdramas can’t be executed well, but I think this one proves they absolutely can. It avoids many of the pitfalls that other microdramas fall into, such as glorifying brutality against women or feeling underdeveloped due to weak scripting and production.I absolutely loved this and easily consider it a top-shelf watch. It’s a hidden identity revenge narrative built around a false eunuch and assassin premise, but it also delivers genuinely hilarious comedic moments that had me in stitches. The villain and adversary dynamics were incredibly well done and made the conflicts engaging while also making me appreciate the antagonist. Add in poignant backstories, palace betrayals, and a romance that truly landed for me, and this became one of my favorite watches.

A Visually Rich Story that Combines Duty, Self-Discovery, and Love
This wasn’t for everyone, but it was for me.There are so many reasons why I enjoyed this. I loved the storyline—it captured my interest and delivered a romance I could really get behind. A lot of romance formulas don’t work for me (most of them actually), but I felt genuinely connected to this one. It was beautiful and engaging, and developed in a way that didn’t make me roll my eyes or lose interest. There were times in the middle where I wanted a bit more of the male lead’s early characterization—war driven and vengeful. Still, the narrative was balanced with other conflicts and subplots, so I wasn't too mad about the shift.
I also loved the darker themes, the underworld elements, and especially the strength of the female lead. Dilraba Dilmurat had kind of lost me over the course of her career, but this—and Love on the Turquoise Land—have brought me back. She portrayed her character exactly how I like my female leads: strong, powerful, decisive, and commanding. But I also appreciated the supporting cast too, even the shifty villains—some of whom found redemption, while others fell completely but still revealed a kind of moral line in the end.
And finally, the soundtrack. There weren’t many songs, but the main ones were perfect extensions of a world I loved watching. They complemented the scenes beautifully and really elevated the overall atmosphere. It was an easy escape for me. Overall, I loved this.

Multi-Layered and Completely Immersive
This is another one that wasn't for everyone—but it was 1000% for me. In my eyes, Guo Jingming did it again, and maybe even outdid himself, if that’s possible.I was hooked from the very start. I didn’t need multiple episodes to get pulled in. The immediate sense of mystery, the offbeat characters, and the foreboding, darker tones drew me in right away. As the story unfolded, both the character and plot development felt sophisticated, intentional, and artistic—building a multilayered narrative that engaged different facets of the story under one cohesive vision. It made the drama feel dynamic in a way that fully held my attention.
It really felt like all my senses were involved. The soundtrack, in particular, beautifully matched the experience and served as a natural extension of an already well-developed world. And I found myself completely immersed in it—drawn in through the different characters, all of whom, regardless of screen time, delivered strong performances and played integral roles in the story. It genuinely felt like something would be missing without each of them.
I especially loved how interconnected everything was, and how the story evolved through distinct phases. As it moved into its climax and resolution, the focus shifted away from mystery and discovery toward the weight of its central themes and their emotional payoff, which made the ending feel all the more impactful. That said, I know some people found this drama boring or confusing—but that’s not how I experienced it at all. Will you like it? Honestly, I don’t know. It really depends … do we have the same watchlist? That’s probably the best place to start.

A compelling look at trauma that left me conflicted
Trigger warning for mention of DV.The script didn’t fully land for me, but the psychological depth was compelling. The twist added another layer of heaviness to the story. What kept me watching was how complex the situations were. The emotions didn't feel simple or straightforward because the characters were often dealing with deeply flawed choices and circumstances.
The way the situations unfolded and the decisions the characters made were messy and, at times, difficult to understand—but people themselves can be messy and contradictory. The trauma and cycles of harm experienced by the characters, including the dynamic of someone being a source of pain and someone who has also been hurt, gave the story a raw emotional weight.
That complexity is what gave the performances their intensity and allowed the drama to explore difficult themes. However, where the drama lost me was in the way it sometimes approached DV. In certain moments, it felt like the story romanticized aspects of the situation or offered a resolution that was cleaner and more forgiving than the subject matter warranted. I don’t believe it’s my place to judge the choices of those involved in these circumstances, but while the drama did shine a harsh light on a difficult topic, I felt it occasionally softened the reality of it in a way that weakened its impact.

Short, simple, and easy to watch—but too predictable
One thing that worked for me was that it's a very short series. Because it's so brief, many of the pacing and execution choices made sense. It felt like a short story—there were no unnecessary plot detours, the narrative is straightforward, and it doesn't waste time getting to the point or moving through key moments.Where the story fell short for me was the premise itself. At its core, it is a simple story about trying to change the course of someone's life, and I found that it leaned more predictable than surprising. The direction of the story was fairly easy to anticipate, so while I appreciated that it avoided dragging things out with endless misunderstandings or repetitive conflicts, I also felt that it lacked some of the twists or emotional discoveries that could have made it more engaging.
Had this been a longer drama, I likely would have struggled to stay invested, but the short format helped. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't a win for me.

An Atmospheric Story That Blends Mystery with a Poignant Exploration of Justice and Human Nature
Wow. When I first started, I wasn't expecting to be blown away. I just thought it would be nice to find a short costume drama since most are much longer, and I liked several of Bai Yufan's previous performances. He seems to gravitate toward serious projects with strong scripts and layered storytelling, so I figured my chances of finding something I'd enjoy were pretty high if he was cast. And I feel like that's exactly what I got.This drama explores justice and injustice, obsession and fate, accountability, and how even good people can make misguided decisions. By the end, it didn't feel like anyone truly won, and coming to terms with that made for an incredibly poignant experience. It was a genuinely dynamic watch for me.
I especially loved how much attention the production team paid to every detail. From the way the scenery, lighting, and settings established the tone to the careful use of sound—whether it was the crunch of gravel beneath their feet or the gentle rush of the stream as they fished—I didn't just watch this drama, I experienced it. I also loved how the narrative played with different timelines, deepening the intrigue as it moved back and forth between the past and present, gradually revealing what had happened. It was a gripping story centered on ordinary people living ordinary lives, yet it left a profound and lasting impression.

A Story I Enjoyed, But a Drama I Didn't
I dropped this drama multiple times before finally pushing through my usual stop points. I don't often give a show this many chances, but I really like the author whose work it was adapted from, and the premise sounded like exactly the kind of story I'd enjoy. I wasn't sure if I'd been watching it at the wrong times or if I just needed to get through the setup. Neither ended up being the case. This is simply a drama that didn't work for me, even though it had all the ingredients to become one I loved.I loved the central narrative, found the side arcs interesting and often tragic, and enjoyed most of the cast and their roles. Conceptually, this is exactly the kind of xianxia I gravitate toward. Unfortunately, the execution and pacing never landed for me. The storytelling often felt disjointed, and it wasn't until the end that I understood how all the different threads connected. Looking back, the structure makes sense, but the journey itself didn't feel fluid, making many of the arcs feel awkward rather than naturally woven together.
However, what ultimately ruined most of the drama for me was Yanhui. While I believe the series was intentionally aiming for an offbeat style, her characterization never sold me. The portrayal of her free-spirited, eccentric personality came across more as a baby voice than as endearing eccentricity. A similar approach worked for me in "Love Between Fairy and Devil," but it didn't here. Instead of feeling like a natural part of the story, her performance felt too mannered and stilted, to the point where I found myself speeding up her dialogue just to keep from dropping the drama yet again.
Overall, this drama simply didn't work for me. It had all the elements of something I should have loved, but the uneven pacing, disjointed execution, and my inability to connect with Yanhui ultimately kept me from enjoying it.

Immersive Atmosphere, Uncertain Destination
This drama was a mixed bag for me. I loved the atmosphere and the way it focused on building a distinct mood. In many ways, it reminded me of an indie film, which is a style I grew up watching in the U.S. I’ve always appreciated the unique storytelling found in independent productions. Rather than relying on glossy, action-packed sequences or casting performers based on popularity alone, indie films often depend on strong acting and genuine performances to carry the story.They also tend to place a great deal of emphasis on aesthetics, making them an essential part of the storytelling formula. The result is a narrative that blends fiction with a sense of real life. While watching this drama, I often felt as though I was witnessing real events unfold. I felt immersed in the storytelling, as if I were observing the lives of ordinary people rather than fictional characters. I also loved the rawness of the camerawork and the industrial feel of the setting. Together, these elements created a rich backdrop that strengthened the overall narrative.
However, I felt the story became less coherent near the end. I have my own theories about what happened, but I’m not entirely sure whether my interpretation is correct because the central event that drives the entire drama is never fully revealed. We receive clues and scattered pieces of information throughout the story, and viewers can connect those dots to form their own conclusions, but nothing is ever explicitly confirmed. Because of that, I felt somewhat let down. I invested a lot of time into the story only to reach a resolution that felt incomplete, leaving me wondering whether the journey had ultimately been worth it.
I don’t know how many people here watch films outside of Asian cinema, but I tend to watch movies from a variety of countries, including France. The best way I can describe my feelings after finishing this drama is that it felt like watching a French film. The sense of existential unease that many French films leave me with can be overwhelming. Even when their stories technically reach a conclusion, they often leave loose threads behind because the ending leaves the audience with lingering emotions and questions. That is exactly how I felt when this drama ended.

An Experimental Drama with Murky Plot Structure
This was enjoyable, but the subplots could have been explained better. I was impressed by the cast and the cinematography was beautiful. It frequently used dream-like sequences to evoke captivating allure and tone, but there were plot holes and the ending wasn't clear. A Romance-Heavy Drama Felt Limited in Depth
This drama was okay and I say that disappointingly because I could have loved it. The performers delivered a great performance, the choreography was engaging, the steam was steamy, and the storyline was unique. It has a nice twist with unexpected hidden identities, and the underlying conspiracies give the drama political intrigue. An Eerie Supernatural Mystery with Mixed Execution
I enjoyed this, but it wasn't consistent. It started strong and then fizzled for me as the series progressed. It is divided into 5 cases, so there are different subplots each time, making the storyline unique and engaging and they revolve around a larger narrative that comes together near the end. The cinematography and sound effects are eerie and great for fall watches. But certain plots weren't as strong or cohesive for me compared to others. I enjoyed "Mysterious Tales of Chang'an" more, but this is a nice option for supernatural and mystery watches and I could see myself watching the more stronger episodes again.Was this review helpful to you?
A Love-Hate Kind of Drama for Me, Engaging Fantasy with Slow Sequences
I initially tried watching this once before but quickly dropped it for its low appeal in the first episode. Much later, I gave it another try—and that time, I stuck with it. It was a strange watch for me, because there was so much I didn’t like, yet also a lot I genuinely engaged with. Some themes fell flat and disrupted my viewing flow—especially the romance scenes, which lacked chemistry or believability. They took up too much screen time and made the story drag for me. But then the show would segue into really compelling sequences that recaptured my attention. There were also stretches where too much time passed without any strong subplots to push the narrative forward, leaving me underwhelmed in the middle. I found myself moving through the drama slowly and somewhat out of obligation. That said, I did enjoy the overall story and theme. The content felt rich, the underlying framework was engaging, and the comedic moments hit all the right notes. I loved almost all the subplots—they were layered with enough poignancy that it was easy to fall in love with the characters and be drawn into their storylines. Not Till the End of The Moon, But It Hits Similar Notes
This was an okay watch and I liked it, but it isn't the best production and I wouldn't recommend it to everyone (there is a lot to forgive). It is low budget and you can tell from the execution, the script, scene transitions, and the set. The version I watched had terrible English dubbing, so I couldn't watch it with audio and the subtitles were so simple that it was like reading at a beginner's level. With that said, it has several elements of Till the End of the Moon and for those who know me, this is my favorite Chinese drama and I have to watch everything related to it. So although this was an okay feature for me, I enjoyed all of these elements, including wardrobe.Was this review helpful to you?
Great Comic Book Premise, Execution Didn’t Work for Me
I really liked Ma Sihan in Eternal Lovesickness, so I went into this hoping to enjoy it just as much. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my cup of tea. If it hadn’t been such a short watch, I likely would have dropped it around the halfway point.It started off light and familiar, but I quickly struggled to stay engaged. The pacing felt slow, and I found the overall execution a bit uninspiring. The story and side elements didn’t capture my interest, and I often wished things would move along more quickly. I also had a hard time connecting with the characters and the narrative, and the subtitles unfortunately made the experience more difficult at times.
That said, this hasn’t put me off Ma Sihan—I still look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.
