He also got very confused by her sudden change of behaviour as she was never a kind, compassionate person. Hence him placing the maid by her side.

He was not falsely accused, he is guilty. Now you can argue that he shouldn’t have meddled but which man in this era would want a single woman (they love) to have a man with a dodgy background around her. You seem to think from a modern POV. Back then the ML’s behaviour would be considered totally normal considering his status and how vulnerable women were (especially single/divorceees). Exactly, finally someone with sense! Everyone seems to forget that she may want to redeem herself but it doesn’t change the fact that she used to be evil and no better than any of the ladies she’s now criticising.
