Anyone watching this purely for the romance is going to have a rough time. They’ll likely spend the whole time waiting for romantic payoffs that were never the priority, and in doing so, they’ll miss the real story, a narrative that deliberately swims against the current (as the title implies), resisting the usual trends and expectations instead of catering to them.

And it’s not like The story of Minglan.

It’s not that romance will be absent; but romance isn’t the main focus of this story. I think the show’s actual focus lies elsewhere, which makes it a difficult watch for viewers who expect love to drive everything.

Oh dear! Li Meng was originally listed under guest cast but she’s now been moved to a supporting role. That means she’ll probably become the villain who tries to bring the ML and FL down, especially since she said she’d remember what the male lead did at the library.

I’m glad, though, that the FL’s adoptive mother has also been moved up from a guest role, it means her character won’t be written out anytime soon.

The producers of The Story of Minglan must be delighted that we always compare almost every similar drama to theirs.

In doing so, however, we blindly discredit the work of others.

Looking at the reaction of the ML’s “saviour” when they were putting him in corner to marry his sister, I don’t think he’s a good person and saving ML might have been a strategy to infiltrate his army and home.

Are you only watching for romance or the actual story?

It’s in the trailer that they get married.

The first wife is gone, lady Du seems to be the replacement to cause havoc. Our dear FL is about to suffer after saving ML from her scheme.

I watched till episode 18 then skipped to 24, and finally dropped it.

I want to finish this one because of ML.

Also dropped Blossoms of power.

I think the her problem is transitioning from a powerful and domineering woman to vulnerable and in love one, she struggles with emotions that make one feel weak.

Looking at the number and of episodes, it’s gonna be fast paced like The Glory.

Oh, don’t bother explaining to these kinds of people. They flooded the comments while the show was ongoing.

Phew! I came to watch it again. I cannot believe these kinds of people still post these kinds of comments, lacking comprehension of the script.

Their relationship is very realistic in the way it deals with unresolved issues and feelings from past relationships caused by misunderstandings.

The FL did not cheat. She simply faced her feelings towards her ex, whom she had misunderstood, while not forgetting that she is married.
