i Don't think she makes the male lead look not appealing. she does this with both leads. if you compare IU and Go Youn-jung, compared to their other drama's, they look shabby and not "hot girls/cute" in her drama. You might find the ml old and ugly because the other kdrama makes unrealistic characters with kpop like makeup for ordinary people. about the age gap, that is also normal in real life.

I don't know about the plot but that's a good team-from casts to makers. Director Ahn Gil Ho seems very interested in Islamic/Arabic history. His Memories of Alhmabra was the first kdrama I've noticed that included this kind of plot and this is the second one.
