Let me be honest, slice-of-life is the best genre of drama for when you are feeling down or anxious or any overwhelming negative emotion. I love the calming pace, it never fails to set me down. The best combination for me - especially in mangas and animes - is slice-of-life and comedy because it becomes sooooooooooooo good. In dramas is nice when you throw some romance in that mix and there you have the best solution for a horrible day, week, month or year, at least for a little while.
I think an interesting difference between them, is exactly their heirs, Queen Elizabeth became one of the most famous rulers of England, while JOJ's son only reigned for a short amount of time and even with the help of the son of Dong Yi, who then became one of the most famous Korean King's while also being an excellent ruler in his time and the one with the reign.
PS: Idk if it's obvious but I really like Dong Yi, so my opinion of JOJ is kinda not the best.

Sometimes watching a drama is a form of escapism for me, especially when I feel overwhelmed IRL, however, there are times when a quote or a dialogue from a drama just happens to be exactly what I needed to hear, and sometimes it hurts, sometimes it makes me cry, but it's still important to me, that's why I love dramas.
P.S.: I wholeheartedly disagree with this quote: 'Broken tools can be repaired, but broken people can't be fixed.' I think some people may need more help, maybe a change in environment, maybe even be removed from their family or social circle, or even be punished for what they did, but broken people can be healed too (Serial Killers are more complicated, so let's not go there).
I think another really nice vision of Henry VII is in the Spanish Princess, which is really an interesting and somber serious. And I do prefer Dong Yi's version of King SukJong, though I do find it weird that in the drama he is such a sweet and helpless guy, but at the same time heads are rolling a lot O_O Thank you for this very interesting article
I confess that I tried to watch the drama, but dropped it because I felt it was such disrespect for the book, the book is amazing and it made me cry and laugh so much and I learned so much Chinese mythology with it, I didn't want want to taint the story with the drama.

About this, I also have many pet peeves in dramas, but I will comment on the ones you mentioned: 1- Though annoying, it doesn't really bother me as much, I am the type of person that binges a 5 seasons series non stop, however, I completely get your point especially if the plot takes to long to develop.
2-You and I are on the same boat, I have a really big hatred towards She Was Pretty because the obvious choice for anyone with a brain would be the 2nd Lead, he was THE ONEm not the other one!!! I also am on the camp that the 2nd Lead on CLOY should not have died, it was stupid and completely without reason.
3-Maybe is because I am Brazilian, but dude no one kisses like that! In 9th-grade people are better kissers than that, I also the whole eyes wide open thing, its okay to keep your eyes open during a kiss, who am I to say anything, but not like this O_O. And like you said this type of scene, to me, removes the idea of love or passion between the characters because if you like someone romantically, you should kiss like you mean it.
4-I agree with you that this one is a very annoying cliche plot, few dramas can actually make it work and I believe Secretary Kim is on that makes it work, but most dramas it doesn't work and is actually really stupid, one of the dramas that has this 'plot twist' and it was totally unnecessary and it still bothers me is Oh My Venus, I love this drama, however, 'we met on childhood' plot is completely unnecessary and added nothing to the drama., which is what happens in most cases.
5-Cliches are cliches because they work (with a clear exception of the abusive ones) and most people, even if they are not willing to admit it, like them, me for example, the problem on this topic is when a drama can only do cliches, and that is a great way to ruin the whole drama. I think cliches work and they have their places, but the screenwriters should know how and when to use them, too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing, Cliche is like nutmeg a little bit and makes your dish amazing, too much and you are eating poison.
I loved this post, CLY is a drama that I sure enjoyed, but it also left with many "can this be real?" kind of thoughts, I look forward to your next part and I would, particularly, really enjoy if you spoke about the NK things they show on the drama, like the way people dress or the inspections or the fact that some of them have generators and they hide it. In the West, in recent years, there's being a lot of conversations about the objectification of women's bodies are selling points for brands (ex. beer ads), movies (ex. Transformers with Megan Fox), and so on, and how distasteful and inappropriate it is but we haven't seen much about this topic on men, be it on SK or the USA or wherever, I can still remember how people commented a lot on Chris Pratt's body after the Guardian's of The Galaxy and Jurassic World, and how uncomfortable he was in interviews when people talked about it, but I didn't see a lot of people speaking about how objectified he was, I guess it is because we haven't reached this point in the conversation as a society, though we should and there is no reason not to, but I think is more so because men aren't put in that position as often as women are, after all, there is a reason we are all manifesting about wanting stronger and more complex female leads. So, not super-duper problematic is just that I think the whole thing when she leaves everything behind, everything she knows (the Ocean) to run after a guy is problematic. Yes, she is a mermaid and that is what mermaids do, and in the drama, it makes sense and all, but, personally, I don't think anyone should abandon everything for someone, and having a drama with a plot like that, can, sometimes, make people think is a good decision to do so, like it is for love, so is alright. But such is Dramaland, and with this comment, I am basically bashing almost the whole romance genre, and like I said I like this drama and have watched it two times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Conclusion: There are some problems, but almost all dramas have some and it's okay as long as the viewers remember IRL is different.

Though I like Legend of the Blue Sea I can't deny it has some problematic stuff, Ç_Ç' But nothing that the plot doesn't justify.
