There actually is. Because of the class difference, Xiaofan speaks indirectly about stuff and Luqing has a tendency to try to deflect because he doesn't want to actually address the issue. The easiest example to show this are the movie scenes, in one, when Xiaofan talks about how sad it is that the character gets cheated on (he's alluding to Luqing abandoning him for his ex) and how can she trust the other character again. Luqing replies directly that Xiaofan doesn't have to worry about it. It's not that they aren't communicating.

Xiaofan doesn't have the luxury of being direct because it might appear ungrateful. So he communicates in other ways. Some of it becomes funny once you realize it. For example, the freaking soup (the most annoying conversations). At first Xiaofan is learning what Luqing likes and perfects it. After he feels betrayed, he asks questions about the soup and wonders what he could have done better. After he's pissed, he's making congee and adds ingredients Luqing doesn't like. Lol.

Not sure if you're American or not but I liken Xiaofan to a somewhat of a 1950s heterosexual housewife in America. There are a lot of portrayals that are similar in media portraying that time. Unless the wife was bold, they often would not address the issue head on because of the power imbalance. But similarly they had ways to get back at their husbands if there husbands made them mad. "Oh honey, I didn't starch your shirts this time. I usually do it EVERY time huh?" Xiaofan's version is "Oh, you don't like all the onions in the congee I made. Oh, maybe I will add celery so it suits you better. *smirk*"

I all of a sudden loved the stupid soup conversations after realizing that Xiaofan was being catty. LOL.

Those people have no boundaries. Also his instructions to his brother could have been, bring the family to the bedroom to discuss the divorce. PERFECTION. Unfortunately, we know the reaction from the intro each week. Only thing I don't like about Chinese and Taiwanese dramas; reveals in the intros. They select those critical moments A LOT for the intros. Also, why I tend to binge and skip intros during binge.

Ok. Just starting this show today cause I wanted to be able to binge a few episodes. BL has made me terrible at waiting for the end of the series for the full binge.

Xiaofan already made the choice to abandon his mother AND Luqing after Luqing didn’t handle Xiaofan properly. I understand Luqing may want to get away from Luqing’s mothers influence but why would Xiaofan’s brother need to be involved for that.

I also don’t think I ever indicated Luqing was Bi. I think I indicated Luqing was going to use the marriage as a cover. Why would Xiaofan, a usually kind person, want another woman person trapped in a loveless marriage. He doesn’t love his wife. But his wife didn’t love him either. But NOW Xiaofan is supposed to be the bastard who not only does not love his wife but gets back together with her to be close to Luqing after she indicates that she might try in their marriage and asks for forgiveness? When do we ever get the notion that Xiaofan is supposed to be that big of a jerk. Moreover, his wife is showing more contrition than Luqing for her actions and she hasn’t even slept with him.

There was a Netflix drama Grace and Frankie where they breakdown the emotional toll of there partners carrying on an affair. Because they’re gay and having an affair, there is this expectation that people are supposed to be okay because society made it so they couldn’t do it openly. Xiaofan, was willing to do the affair when his wife was unapologetically unfeeling towards them and there was no relationship. He’s not okay with his similarly love deprived wife also begging for love for him too and not receiving it. AND her own brother was okay with him doing that to her. It’s not the evidence but it makes me question whether Luqing is capable of love and confirms what the sister said all along; he does not love her even in a sibling way. WHO does that to a sibling starved of love for their own happiness. Like damn, would I even actively support that for someone I don’t like.

This is about Luqing making choices for Xiaofan whether he likes it or not. That’s why forcing Xiaofan to come back to the apartment is such a big deal. Xiaofan made his choice by asking for the divorce. His friend got in the way by sabotaging Xiaofans brother. But where Luqing loses it and becomes the villian is when Xiaofan tries to draw boundaries and Luqing basically tells him move in or we’re done (that’s Xiaofan’s brothers job too). Now Luqing even refers to Xiaofan’s family as greedy. Never looked down on his family before this.

Now Luqing is actively overturning his choice and destroying his family in the process. Even if that was his plan from the beginning when he stepped away from Xiaofan to make sure he wasn’t on his mother’s radar, he had no problem leaving Xiaofan alone and lonely. When Xiaofan asked for assurance, Luqing said don’t worry, didn’t make it clear what he was doing, and got caught hanging out with the ex. So not only does he leave Xiaofan whenever he wants without communicating, he let someone help sabotage his family, and compounded it by putting his brother in the position to make it worse AND refused to listen.

You’re right! I read her as young and inexperienced. In this sense, Xiaofan’s wife actually saved her. Xiaofan looked like he was about to concede in that moment when his Mom asked didn’t he. And he knew better and why it was wrong on so many levels. Maybe that was another reason why he needed to divorce and leave. He almost allowed his sister to be put in that trap. At the very least offered to it.

I’m juiced. He has to be moving in the shadows cause and doing a lot of legwork cause Luqing knows about his trading account and told him to shut it down. Luqing has spies like his ex.

The says he hasn’t been involved with Luqing since they were 16. If that’s the case then he just told him he didn’t cheat AT ALL. Just distanced himself from Xiaofan.

The Ex said Xiaofan wanted Luqing to give him a name. I don’t think Xiaofan ever seemed that delusional. I think Xiaofan wanted assurance that they were together on this and Luqing has actively proven he doesn’t know how to emotionally assure anyone. His sister, his ex, Xiaofan are all miserable while the Luqing plans the next venture; a wife.

I don’t think enough credit is given to how selfish Luqing is even if he didn’t cheat. He knows how greedy Xiaofan’s brother is, knows he’s not loyal, and specifically puts him in a position where he could destroy his family and his ex get information. I find it hard to believe that wasn’t intentional. 1. He could potentially punish the ex and make him go back to his trading area. 2.He could continue to punish Xiaofan for trying to leave and not acting the way he wants.

I think Luqing was referring to Xiaofan when he says he’s in love and the marriage is a cover. If he was really in love he wouldn’t keep coming back to Xiaofan and let him divorce. Luqing’s sudden marriage feels like he is trying to line things up for his life with Xiaofan. They are supposed to be married and live their life on the downlow. And take trips together. The problem is Luqing has never been able to give what Xiaofan and his sister asked for; emotional assurance. The ex seems to say he wanted his name and to be in the open but that sounds like he’s emotionally still 16 yrs old and not taking into account anyone’s family. Oddly enough, that disregard almost makes him perfect for Luqing.

What I think makes Luqing a villian is that it always seems to feel like everyone made a deal with the devil and the devil withheld just enough for them to feel starved and comeback for more. Xiaofan is different in that he didn’t come to him wanting something and tried to leave with nothing. I kinda feel like his brother being in that position is Luqing punishing him for not going back to the way it was in addition to feeding the ex information. But Luqing is trying to marry and make another woman miserable and ruin Xiaofan’s family so he can keep him. Like the brothers senselessness is actively going to ruin the family name.

I don’t see how Luqing thought Xiaofan would watch that happen. The brother ruin himself, yes. Ruin his mother and his family name he can keep the Bei name connection; hell no.

Xiaofan has always kept his connection with his mother. She sold him to the Bei’s but thought he would have a better life. She seems to realize at the same time Xiaofan does that the brother is hopeless and is burdensome. Out of everyone, that is the emotional connection Xiaofan is sharing right now. The burden of family. So the mother is in a sense paying for the deal she made with the Bei’s too.

Xiaofan has to be smarter than Luqing, his spies, and Luqing ex. There is no way Luqing isn’t paying attention to Xiaofan if he knew about the trading account, tried to get Fanfan to use his money, and told him to close it. Luqing said before he knew about stocks and there no way Fanfan is gonna run the risk of being tied to or owing a favor to Luqing’s ex. Luquing’s ex can play nice now but hee came in with ALL the disrespect before. According to everything he’s learned these families all operate the same way.

I love that the soup conversation annoyed us so much that Soupy is a appropriate nickname.

I don’t think the sister is “in love with her brother.” I think she’s upset that 1. Luqing is capable of love cause he never loved her as family 2. Having another woman legitimately having the Lady Bei name. I don’t read it as lustful incest. But that scene where she asks him to strip at gunpoint was weird. I had a hard time taking that scene seriously because of how she held the gun and it was clearly plastic.

I’m feeling less and less anxious about the brother the more I think about it. If Luqing’s character holds up to the writing, there is NO WAY he doesn’t see Xiaofan’s brother doing what he is doing. You mean to tell me, the Bei’s have that legacy, Luqing’s the master of market manipulation and information, has his friend following people all the time, and he can’t see his ex and Xiaofan’s brother coming for him even though his friends AND Xiaofan gave him multiple warnings. Luqing’s character has been arrogant, not stupid.

However, given all that, this is why the phone call is such a big deal. If Luqing is paying attention to all of this and Xiaofan is as smart as Luqing says, Luqing ignored Xiaofan and put his brother in a position where he could cause collossal damage not just to Xiaofan but now his hometown. Say whatever you want about Xiaofan sacrificing for his family and Luqing, is he supposed to just stand by as Luqing builds his happy life and everyone else gets destroyed. Luqing’s sister is chaos but Luqing’s destructive power is top tier. He’s even involving a new family by getting married and telling Xiaofan to stay put make me happy, and watch. Luqing’s diabolical.

I think Luqing setup a Sophie’s choice and the maid story is at play again. Does Luqing have to worry about the spoon being dropped? If he still trusts Xiaofan like he says he does, Xiaofan should be able to outmaneuver Luqing. But my hesitation comes with the ultimatum and the actions afterwards. A lot of Luqing’s actions seemed rushed now. The ultimatum, the key, the debit card, the planned trip, the girl, the marriage, the emotional check-ins with Xiaofan. Then there’s the trading account he knew about and telling him he has no head for finance. Luqing clocked his account and the potential to use it with his brother and told him to close it. Just like the bitter ex has his brother spying, we already know Luqing has spies.

Xiaofan has to be smarter than Luqing, his spies, and the ex in order to get active revenge. He has to be as smart as Luqing told his friend he was. If he is, that’s a LOT oof legwork they have to put in these last two episodes cause Xiaofan has not displayed his intelligence ever. But I’d love it if I was surprised though. Luqing playing let’s make a deal with everyone with the catch-22 modifier is annoying. He must be stopped Fanfan!!!

Here’s me hoping Xiaofan turns justifiably diabolical in the last two episodes.

I’m in a different camp. Yes technically it would be incest but I think the tell is how quickly she emotionally moved on from her brother to Fanfan.

The sister has always been emotionally starved. She like her brother, yes. But I think it was that she fantasized about being a full Bei. She knows she’s not and that was her problem with both herself and Fanfan from the beginning. She was the unloved desperately seeking love half Bei with no status in society because she’s a bastard. That’s why she abused Fan fan the way she abused herself. She couldn’t accept her status therefore couldn’t accept his. They are not Bei’s.

I don’t think she is jealous in the lustfully incestuous sense. I think she’s jealous in that she never believed someone would be worthy of Luqing’s love. Remember what triggered her was Luqing admitting that he was in love. She never got that. She got money and disinterest. Marriage is fine. But love? She wanted that too.

Now she turns to Xiaofan, and as per her character, recklessly asks to make love. He should just love her right? She’s now over her fantasy of being a full Bei and loved by her family as the only Lady Bei. It might even be that she is so proud of the name Bei, that she follows Luqing’s example by looking at Xiaofan. If Luqing could love someone not Bei, maybe she should love someone not Bei (Xiaofan).

Xiaofan will surely love her now that’s she’s turned around. I mean, he hasn’t left her, so it means he was always waiting for her, right?

I feel bad for her but she crossed the line at the party when she tortured Fanfan. Not wanting to pretend their marriage is love is one thing. Torturing your partner cause you can is another. She said anyone at the party could have their way with Xiaofan after drugging him. So if she gets caught in the karma, I’m not gonna feel too bad.

She tortured fanfan at the party. Literally the reason Luqing slept with him. She even mentioned possibly letting some people having their way with fan fan at the party before bringing Luqing. I admit I never thought she hated him (or at the very least show as little respect to him as she does herself). I feel bad for her. She mostly left Fanfan alone but THAT was horrible.
