I think this hits the nail on the head in terms of what is wrong with this drama. The novel itself is not plot heavy. In fact the "plot" is full of blank spaces for readers to decipher what happens. It is actually 100pct an unforgettable character driven story about obsession and how powerless the main characters are against destiny and their own worst instincts. It must be acted out with passion, nuance and depth and its actually to be fair to the actors quite difficult to pull off. I think they do a fairly good jobs but no one's performance is at the masterful level.

The overly emotive ML is vastly overrated and I challenge anyone that doubts me to watch Love a Lifetime without feeling at least slightly nauseated by how chatty and emotive the ML is.

There is truth to that but Ashile Sun and Fang Jianming are innately very different personality types.

He plays a dark and manipulative character but I feel Chen Kun's interpretation of Ning Yi in Rise of Phoenixes is more convincing.

It is this director's fatal attraction. But FJM is still an advanced version of Bai Zihua.

Couldn't agree more. What's so great about being an empress??? There were plenty of really moronic and vapid ones throughout 5000 years of Chinese history. Happiness is more important.

The emperor has shown himself to be fairly astute. He must suspect but probably wants to give him the benefit of the doubt.

In the novel it is actually Zhuoying who brings peace and prosperity to both kingdoms and goes on to do great things. Haishi and Tilan liberate the merfolk but then the emperor there was a tyrant that was killing them. I am not sure there is that much value added to smacking around a bunch of idiotic ministers who are utterly incapable of defending the kingdom anyway.

He is emboldened. And he knows they are onto him already anyway.
