This Mudan arc is a really boring digression and so cliche I am getting cavities. I am shocked they didn't just go right ahead and call her Sujin.

I don't think the adaptation is bad, I quite enjoy it. But I am sympathetic to the anger many novel fans feel bc the novel is vastly superior even though it is a lot sadder.

Actually it would not have been that difficult to adapt faithfully at all and to be fair many scenes do a great job doing so. They just changed the characters almost beyond recognition. Considering it is not a plot heavy novel but a character driven story, this pretty much mutilates it for the die hard novel fans.

I just laugh at the shocked speechless look on his face every time Haishi tells him off. Poor Jianming - he is gonna be so be one of those terrified of his wife kind of guys!

My understanding is that anyone on the CAPA list can appeal their inclusion on it. Hopefully he does so and succeeds in getting himself removed. Before he was added to this list, it was just an unspoken unwritten ban. That is even worse because there is no recourse for appeal when there is no official ban.

Yes that is the same video I saw. Ji Chang wants to marry Haishi so that he can get to Jianming and thus to the emperor. Undoing the spell will set everyone free - Jianming should not have to force the emperor to choose to live.

I think the spell can be broken if both the emperor and Jianming agree but in the novel Jianming repeatedly refuses to do so (knowing the emperor will commit suicide if he does). The mermaid power is just breathing under water and she saves Haishi at the end. Of course the drama can change all that.

There are actually a lot of youtube videos speculating on the ending. I have also previously shared some darker ones but this one popped up on my account this morning that is happy. They are all however just educated guesses I can't tell what is more or less credible.

I agree the emperor can just forgive her or claim he was in on it. It seems after that Ji Chang tries to marry her. At which point the emperor steps in and marries her instead.

Basically the emperor marries Haishi to save her from the crime of lying about her female identity. But nothing happens between them, he unwinds the baixi bond between himself and Jianming and sets them free to wander the world together.

Since this thread has become so grim, here is another spoiler prediction for how this could end happily:

I think its rather pointless bc Jianming is already running out of time. The repeated injuries he sustained on behalf of the emperor are starting to affect him.

The novel has less than 24 chapters out of which they tried to make a 48 episode drama. There is not that much plot in it either it’s mostly a character story. So there will be lots of filler content and it feels like no plot progression.

If it follows the novel both men die at the end.

Idk - it’s possible but if you want to hear him speak there are lots of BTS and interviews. His Mandarin is ok but it has a very strong Cantonese tone to it so he has to be dubbed.
