Sorry that was a typo I meant Haishi is Consort Chunrong (and I went back and fixed it). Tilan is Consort Shurong in both the drama and the novel. It is not clear who bears the child in the drama but in the novel Haishi/Chunrong is the mother.

In the novel, Jianming is the center of the triangle. Haishi never really understands him or the depth of his feelings for her she just resents him for not returning her feelings and for literally giving her to the emperor. Jianming does this bc he is obsessed with his legacy as baixi and consumed with guilt for his miscalculation that deprived his best friend of his lover and child. So he kind of "makes it up" to him with Haishi. The emperor wants to die and has no interest in ruling but he can't bear to kill Jianming as a consequence but also resents him for forcing him to live on. He gets together with Haishi in some odd way to appease Jianming who actually has a lot of influence over him. I can't explain it properly its just an insanely complex and sad tortured triangle. I find Jianming the most interesting character in the novel but I think the drama had to write him to be less dark for censorship reasons.

Well its even more taboo in the book bc he is her foster father. Tbh shifu student happens so much in historical Chinese literature it doesn't bother me at all. I think as long as she is old enough to know what she wants its fine. This is based on a very dark novel that explores dark themes. I love this kind of story but its hard to turn into a drama, esp with current censorship norms.

I blame both actors, there is just no chemistry between them.

Uhmmm.... that article is just simply not accurate. The drama is a huge commercial success. Douban doesn't even have 200mm subscribers and the rating is irrelevant to how much money a drama makes. The only thing that matters are how many views. The more views, the more ad sponsors and the more non-paying subscribers subscribe VIP to watch ahead. So don't worry, this drama is raking in the big bucks. Tencent for sure is not sweating the Douban rating.
