Chinese subscribers pay something like CNY 25/month or $3.50 or half what we pay. So its fine that iQiyi wants to really charge them for advanced viewing. But we pay at least double we should just get the advanced episodes for free. To be fair to them, they have told me its bc translation takes time but I think they can just hire more translators. In any case, in my region my VIP gives me access to the Chinese site as well but that is not true for all regions.

I just found her Shiyi too docile which in the drama makes sense bc it fits an ancient character so I am enjoying the fleshing out of the past but in modern times it just lost me. I love Bai Lu as well but I still think she had the best chemistry with Xu Kai. Ren Jialun is pretty good too but as you point out he holds back a bit. It has somewhat killed Song of Youth for me though bc there is zero zippo chemistry there. She is obviously only acting which is even more obvious now that this is also airing.

I know but its gone to far and its kind of backfiring. People who have been sidelines so far are starting to comment/object saying isn't it going to far and how fair is that to his co stars who did nothing wrong. Without mentioning his name I have started to see very intelligent articles and opinion pieces in Chinese publications about mob justice and the cancel culture and is this what we want. Indeed. I attempted the novel some time back but I didn't complete it. One of the reasons (not the only one) I stalled out was because I just kept thinking if I were him and remembered nothing, I would think she was just nuts. I like the way the drama portrays the past even though I think the politics are cursorily and sloppily written. It is incredibly sad but I am totally ok with tragedies and star crossed lovers - I don't need happy endings. I am not convinced I will watch or be able to complete the modern story since I gave up on the novel. I didn't hate it, I just got bored and rolled my eyes through the psychic parts. This is one where for me the drama will probably exceed the book and I really hope they change the modern part bc there were lots of stuff I didn't like about it.
