So I did read the novel but stopped halfway through. I don't remember anything about the ML having a sister.....…
I suspect/hope there should be some twist bc they have different surnames. She certainly isn't that well written and the acting is also not great. But on the other hand, Qing Tai just rocks - at times I love her more than the FL!

Story of Minglan ML had a harem.
Yes but beyond palace politics, HK and Taiwan made a ton of super tragic turn of the century/Republican era dramas about wealthy families navigating the changing times where there often are multiple wives. It was just normal for the times and the themes were broader and more interesting than just fighting over a man or money bc of the turbulent times. The heavy hand of Chinese censorship has destroyed or sent all these now politically incorrect themes, including all the awesome gangster dramas into deep freeze forever.

Duke of Mount Deer lol
True, LOCH could still be the most popular or well known. But Jin Yong himself always felt Mt Deer was his most innovative, profound and unique work. I hated the harem aspect but I loved it for its humor and satire. Wei Xiaobao is the ultimate anti-hero. I always felt that both JOL and SSS as well as other popular works borrowed from its themes. Whereas Guo Jing was Jin Yong's most "blank" and least interesting hero - a good for the sake of being good kind of guy. I also agree that the Tony Leung Andy Lau version is the best one. I also always feel that Wei Yingluo is the female Wei Xiaobao - even down to how Wu Jingyan's look and the way here hair is so strictly pulled back, esp in the early scenes. My first thought was OMG Wai Siubo has reincarnated into a woman Wei Yingluo to reunite with Kangxi emperor's grandson Qianlong emperor!🤣

In both the SSS and JOL novels, the ML has multiple relationships with many women, I believe at times concurrent. I only read the opening chapters of JOL but it opens with the ML dying of a terminal disease and lamenting he is still a virgin. I think I almost died laughing when I read it. When he gets a second chance, he goes on to fully experience "The Joy of Life" i.e., sex. The SSS novel continues on for over 20 volumes. My dad is reading them he told me the ML has more than one relationship.

That's why they invented divorce right? Just a modern day version. Better to be the first wife than the last wife.…
They had divorce going back even before Tang dynasty. That didn't get in the way of polygamy. Tbh I have no issue with it. If I were a man or a woman in times where no one gets to choose their spouse, its not always a bad thing for a man to have many wives... In fact some of the best, most interesting Republican era dramas I have watched were those old dramas about men with many wives. They didn't just revolve around the usual jealousy women vs women plots.

Duke of Mount Deer lol
That was Jin Yong's ultimate male fantasy novel... and by far his most popular one. Too bad it wouldn't land in today's world. But I believe both JOL and SSS are also harem stories they just got neutered in the drama adaptations.

This comment just made me realise this and I'm kinda concerned now 😭
They should be maternal cousins (different surname).

The novel does not have good reviews. Probably better they made significant changes to it.
Yeah adolescent writing is a hard no for me even when I was still an adolescent. As for the drama adaptation let's wait and see - NO PLOT SPOILERS PLEASE.

We can all see this is hard for you to understand and accept but ZLY has aged out and has moved on to mature roles. Be happy for her and move on with her and go watch those dramas instead.

Title The Princess's Gambit Spoiler
No wonder why in episode 9, SZY's sister commented that SZY and Prince Wuxia looked alike. Interesting. :O
Well the actors look nothing alike but definitely the 3rd and 4th princes could be twins.

I feel bad for Huai Jin, his cousin CP is such a looser . Meng brother and sister don't seem that bad but they…
It’s kind of silly and greedy of their clan bc the dude isn’t even fighting for the throne. He has been named he is clearly next in line. Why risk that for money you can’t really openly spend anyway when it’s just a matter of time that you have it all??? Dumb as rocks first villain we have here.

I suspect the CP is just the first villain..
I am going to guess the second and possibly third princes are the next ones. He is going to end up putting his cousin on the throne.

Usually good actors can elevate their co-stars acting but even LXY couldn’t save that one!!! But he is definitely getting a more inspired performance out of MZY here.

what a naive 4th prince .. he and ML's sister make a cute , clueless couple .. you would think tough times make…
Well he is not favored but still a prince and was never ousted like Zaiye, who had to assume a whole new identity was. I wonder if he could be executed if they find out he is a Xie.

It’s pretty intrusive throughout. I had to turn on the Chinese subs to fully follow the dialogue.

I think, at this point, if it is not overly loud, it is not a c-drama 😅🥲
Sure if you are reading subtitles what difference does it make that the Bgm drowns out the dialogue? Unfortunately for people like me who rely on listening it makes a big difference.

Probably bc Wei was a real kingdom from 3 Kingdoms lore and they wanted to avoid being accused of distorting history.
Yes but POB was clearly heavily inspired by 3 Kingdoms. This one so far does not seem to be.
