I wouldn't say the drama bombed, at least not commercially. Those are usually flakey stuff like Fox Spirit series which cost stupid amounts of money relative to viewership. Low budget dramas are surprisingly profitable - they don't need many views to make money. But yes, money is tight at iQiyi. They frequently tell investors that modest budget, modest view dramas are their sweet spot.

I could be wrong but I suspect Pingan was about mid-teens when they were ousted. His older sister was not married yet at the time. Even though they lost their income (their father's business), they probably had some property and other assets that allowed Pingan to continue to keep up pretensions and hang out with other scions of wealthy families and for his sister to marry a poor but promising scholar like Li Shande with a modest house as a dowry. He probably only went to work at the tavern after they sold off everything to try to cure his sister. By then, Xiu'er was already old enough to remember her mom's sickness. And he didn't really help those "sworn bros" that much - he overheard them mocking his efforts and his downfall his first night at the tavern.

There are 5 volumes in the series, KOL is V2. The show must go on - many hit series replace roles with no impact - . JOL 2 replaced 2 support roles and JOL 3 will have to replace 1 very key role. The Zichuan series has a super high 8.7 Douban books score - better than a masterpiece like NIF's 8.5, JOL's 8.4 and SSS at 8.1. You rarely get source material with such high ratings from picky Douban. So iQiyi always meant to make the entire series but only got internal budget approval for 2 seasons. Most the cast should want to be associated with projects like this, esp if the budget gets raised and the series becomes increasingly popular. And in any case only YXW's return is key as they really can't make the rest without him. He is not an idol actor, he picks good projects with excellent source material. His STOTD series is iQiyi's most profitable and successful drama series to date. So it makes sense for iQiyi to try to get him to continue with this, esp with the high praises his performance has won. Even though the drama didn't top the charts while airing, it didn't need many views to to be profitable bc of the low budget. The IP is very well loved and word of mouth has been drawing novel fans to pick it up.

Most of them should be available - they are mostly regulars at Hengdian who bounce from set to set. LYN never got that much screen time, his role is quite replaceable. But I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to come back as well bc his character gets more interesting in later seasons.
