The innkeeper was a soldier at a lonely Western border frontier for years. Maybe he had a family and made puppets for his son and daughter. And then probably they died and their souls inhabited the puppets. Either that or he was just a lonely soldier who made himself a pretend family and bc of his attachment and longing over time these objects obtained a soul.

There is a lot of foreshadowing, almost too much. I can't figure out whether Xuanye's white hair is due to drawing the talismans for Banxia or using the Lihuo sword. I am gonna hope he is a demon with a super long life bc otherwise, that is not a good foreshadowing.
The other sad foreshadowing is the cat 9 Lives clearly already used up at least 5 of them to save Xuanye's demon hunter's fee of 1000 teals. Clearly he is a good demon. I think Banxia could also be part demon bc her father seems to know about demons and he knows the cat demon. Is the cat demon her mother?

I am really enjoying this. My only real gripe with it is even though he has improved noticeably, Ren Jialun's lines are still not good enough. I really wish they had dubbed him. But I love the zhiguai/志怪 genre and its directed by Lin Yufen so I really shouldn't complain.

In that case the rabbit Chixue has to be his demon companion.

Yes she totally nailed it as Wuniang. Glad she came back bc she is a really terrific young actress.

I don't watch trailers but there is a clear foreshadowing that one of them is actually a demon I just didn't know whether it was Xuanye or Banxia.

The cat demon paid Xuanye his demon hunter's fee of 1000 to get him to hunt the demon at the inn. I assume he wants Xuanye to free Banxia's cousin.

This is different from Lotus Casebook, which IMHO failed to make the audience care about the cases and the people involved in the cases. It was purely focused on the main protagonist and their story. So far all three cases in Demon Hunter are creepy sad cases told somewhat empathetically from the point of view of the antagonists. Whereas the cases in Lotus Casebook were so meh that I can barely remember any of them. But I will remember most of the cases here.

I actually feel sorry for them. And I think his story is foreshadowing what lies ahead - can a human love a demon?

She is super cute and her features have character. They did something funny with her lips to make her look a bit different in this drama. She may not be the idol standard of beauty but her look makes a lasting impression which is more important. I have liked her a lot ever since Novoland Eagleflag and the Dark Lord.

One of my favorite directors. She always gets the small details right and her camera angles are very nice. There is a lot of foreshadowing and hinting going on if you pay attention to the dialogue.

I don't think he will die but I wouldn't be shocked if he turns out to be a demon.

Demons can be good or evil in Greek, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist religion and philosophy. They are only evil in the Christian world which is only about 2.4bn out of 8bn people in the world. In any case, this is Chinese mythology where yāo/妖 in this drama can also be translated just as a supernatural being, that may or may not be evil. Sun Wukong or the Monkey God in Chinese classic Journey to the West starts out as a mischievous yāo/妖 that cultivates into Buddhahood. One of the big themes underlying this narrative is not all yāo/妖 are evil, that there are also good yāo/妖. If that idea is too unpalatable to you, you'd best skip this one and probably many others in this genre as well.

Well unfortunately I am going to guess that she is a 傀儡妖/rén'ǒu mèi or a doll spirit. Probably the innkeeper made this "daughter" doll when he was lonely soldier guarding the border and became so attached to it that it absorbed spiritual energy and developed a soul. I think she is evil and keeping people at the inn while her “father” keeps trying to send them away to save them. The way she keeps talking about how pretty Banxia is is really giving me goosebumps. She is probably gonna try to body swap Banxia or something like that. Yeeks.

It paid Xuanye his fee of 1,000 teals (which is 5 lives at 200 teals per life that the cat earned) in order to save someone from the inn. I am going to guess that someone is Banxia's cousin Yanqiu. Which makes me wonder whether the cat is Banxia's father or Banxia's father's friend who saved him.

I think the black cat is a good yāo/妖
