They invested in very good VAs and the actors actually bothered to learn and deliver their lines properly so they are easy to dub well. Yang Mi used to be one of the worst laziest diva actors in the industry, you can see her in BTS mumbling her lines bc she didn't bother learn them or deliver properly during filming. She just let her VAs clean up her mess. That's why now she is struggling so hard with her line delivery and to dub herself.

Whatever Douban's flaws and biases, the industry itself respects it as the most authoritative rating site. Even when they get much better scores on other sites, it is their Douban rating that they will boast about.

The Long Season is a phenomenally well written and well acted story. It moved Chinese audiences to tears but if you didn't grow up in China during that time, you won't be able to relate to it.

Xianxias and idol dramas in general rarely get a high scores from Douban. The Douban audience is very picky and will take off points for objective criteria like whether the cast can dub themselves and how original the plot and storyline is. The other big thing is the dialogue, which is only as good as the translation to MDL audiences. But Douban audiences will differentiate on the basis of the literary standard of the screenwriter and the beauty in the language and scriptwriting. In light of that TBL rating at 6.7 is really good.

All the main characters here are dubbed by VAs. Wang Dou's character is dubbed by 钱文青 Qian Wenqing. He also dubbed Li Tongguang/Chang Huasen's character in AJTL.

On the bright side, Shengyi's bro is a hottie! I was so disappointed she didn't bring him back to Chang'an with her.

Youzhen's title is 吉安县主. Ji An/吉安 is probably her fief, which means she gets her own income from it. During Tang dynasty daughters of princes were given the title 县主/Xiànzhǔ or county princess. There should be plenty of county princesses, even adopted daughters and noble ladies can be conferred this title. The difference is her father King Ning is a powerful prince. The daughter of the crown prince however would be 郡主/Jùnzhǔ /princess lite and of course the emperor's daughter would be 公主/Gōngzhǔ which is the real thing. Not all princesses are the same in China. Probably Youzhen is all hoity-toity bc the emperor is young so his offspring are all still kids. So there is probably no "more royal" princess that has come of age to compete with her.

To put it in perspective, huge hits like JOL1 and Story of Minglan are at 7.9.

Well... I am sad to say I think assuming she says yes, he still wins. Bc in feudal society, a woman's wealth belongs to her husband after marriage (except her dowry). But the bet amount is not considered dowry. (That is also why Mudan felt able to tell Shengyi she can marry anyone except her ex. Bc that would make him her business partner).

I agree Shengyi is realistically written and portrayed. She is more fitting for her time and a product of her experiences and upbringing. She also has different goals from Mudan, she wants a family and I think it takes courage to put it out there in the face of Mudan's conviction about going at it by herself. I love Mudan but it'd be super boring if this story were about the friendship between Mudan 1.0, Mudan 2.0 and Mudan 3.0. Besides, even though she seems like the weak link in the partnership at the moment, so far Shengyi has not yet betrayed Mudan. I don't think its fair to try and convict her for an offense she has not yet committed.

Yeah I think Shengyi's life goals are not the same as Mudan's and there is nothing wrong with that at all. This is something that would have manifested itself at some point with or without the ex popping up. Mudan should be able to head it off by getting a matchmaker to introduce her to some nice men. And I hope she won't knowingly betray Mudan although I think she is quite dumb and can be tricked into doing so.

I really enjoyed that scene too. It was two people completely talking pass each other. There is no meeting of the minds and there never will be.
