Yes I totally agree with that. But at that point he had turned on Wanning and he knew XFF and Duke Su were coming for him. Even though he was in denial or that was a last ditch attempt to salvage himself, in his heart he knew he had rolled the dice and had to play it out to the end.

I think Wanning only ended up on the wrong side of the emperor bc she was King Cheng's spy in the capital. I think the emperor would have been kind to her had she stayed out of politics and found her a good husband. Shen Yurong is the typical ant archetype; the common person that is crushed by imperial privilege. What he said is true, if he were born a Duke, Wanning would never have been able to force him to make the choices he was forced to make. That is not to say he chose well bc he really did not.

The emperor actually did make a lot of allowances for Wanning's wild and insolent behavior. I can understand she was in pain but there were just too many innocent bystanders that were collateral damage to her wickedness. Shen Yurong was indeed a coward but then he didn't have many good choices and in the end he screwed himself more than anyone else. I guess at the end of the day, his path was littered with not as many bodies.

Like most soap operas, it is actually very addictive when you watch it. But then after awhile all the high drama and angst becomes exhausting. The ending was really lame but if you cut off the last arc it is actually fine so I decided to just be a bit forgiving. Hope your mom enjoys it.

I am happy to watch both but after The Double I don't really need another do over/second chance story. I would have preferred them to air Dashing Youth instead but no such luck.
