YK is not well written or well acted here. He is just dumbed down to an outright villain. In general all the young…
As a huge fan of the books, I actually don't have any problem with the characters the way Jin Yong wrote them and would never dare to think of changing them. I accept them flaws and all. Changing them would make it not LOCH anymore.

If you were frustrated enough by previous versions, this one is so much worse.
The 1983 portrayal of all the main characters are truest to the book, which is why fans still rate it 9.2 on Douban. Unfortunately all the subsequent adaptations keep missing something or the other. The 2008 Guo Jing is a fail (yeah hurts me to say that bc its Hu Ge) but it allegedly does Yang Kang well. The 2017 version is most like the 1983 but Huang Rong is a fail in it. Li Yitong is very pretty but she has no screen presence and her Huang Rong is insipid. This 2024 version actually does deliver a decent Guo Jing and Huang Rong. Not great but decent. Unfortunately the Yang Kang is complete disaster. I always felt Liu Xueyi would have made a fantastic Yang Kang but he is aged out now. Its a pity bc as far as stories go, this story is a masterpiece that deserves an adaptation that can be rated 9.0+.

Hi! I'm writing an article about cdramas set in various dynasties, and I'd like to ask whether An Ancient Love…
Ancient Love Song should be set in a much earlier period than Somg dynasty. More likely Warring States or Spring and Autumn period when many small states were squabbling with each other. Good luck with the article.

Its my favorite "fairytale" growing up. When I got round to reading the HEA Western ones I just either scratched my hear or died of boredom.

I think the 1983 version best tells Yang Kang's story but its too dated for most viewers. Mu Nianci must be evaluated in the context of her time. She was going to love and marry the first man that beat her in combat. And Yang Kang was that man. It didn't hurt that he was super charismatic and handsome. Yang Kang is my favorite character in this series after Huang Rong. I never held it against him that he loved the father that raised him more. In fact he is very similar to Qiao Feng, my favorite Qin Yong hero. Qiao Feng was raised as a Song but he was really a Khitan. He identified himself as Song but was rejected by the Song. Yang Kang was biologically a Song but identified himself as a Jin and reviled and hated by the Song as a villain and a betrayer of his race. This is a theme Jin Yong explored many times from different angles.

Hot blooded hasn't improved...the legend of condor heroes 2017 was better produced than this. Screen writing,…
Tsui Hark is shooting the never before shot story of the battle of Xiangyang. Even Jin Yong didn't detail the finale he only mentioned it in passing in the third part of the trilogy Heaven Sword. Don't google it if you don't want to be spoiled. But technically what Tsui Hark is making is fan fiction, its not really Jin Yong.

"I'm still naively hoping that the other side stories will be at least passable."
I have been hoping for better than passable but tbh Jin Yong never really fleshed them out that much. I am here for the side stories but I wonder if these writers can fill in the blanks properly.

"Brilliantly destroyed" is spot on. It takes effort to muck up such an iconic story like this!

Heheh.... they swapped the order - in the 1983 version Huang Rong appears in ep 9!

He plays Yang Jian, Erlang shen, one of my favorite characters. But it should be the next movie he has a bigger role.

If I have time I am gonna compile short clips of the old characters vs the new ones.

In the other versions, those other characters get maybe 2 or 3 episodes. They are getting 8+8+8 in this one. So they had to cut the main character stories.

As I've said below, this adaptation decided to skim over Guo Jing, Huang Rong, Yang Kang and Mu Nianci character stories so that they can focus on Huang Yaoshi, Ouyang Feng, Hong Qigong and Duan Zhixing. If you are interested in the first 4, you have to watch the 2017.

Yeah his mask is even featured in the opening theme song of the Eastern Heretic chapter of the 1983 version. It is a core part of Huang Laoxie's character, the fact that he likes to be incognito. He continues to wear it later in Return of Condor Heroes as well whenever he leaves Peach Blossom Island. In the books he wears a real human skin mask to appear emotionless and make him less recognisable to his enemies, especially the Old Toxic Creature. But all the dramas make it an obviously fake mask. Yang Guo also picked up this habit from him to make himself less handsome so that women stop falling in love with him.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Really i haven't watched the 2017 version and i thought it would be worse in terms of cgi and fighting scenes…
The intention of this version is to focus on the older generation so they cut down the 4 main characters of the younger generation. Most viewers don't really mind bc they have seen the many previous versions and know those characters well. They are NOT done well AT ALL here. Most of us are just waiting for the older generation storylines to begin which are rushed through in other versions. Those should be in the next 4 chapters of this. If I were watching for the first time I would skip Hot Blooded and watch the 2017 version up until Peach Blossom Island when Eastern Heretic's story begins and then come back to watch the 2024 chapter of that.
