Yang Kang is a very complicated character. His mom spoiled him and allowed him to be raised as a Jin prince and never told him his true roots. He was loved by his foster father who loved them so much he didn't even have other concubines or try to have biological sons of his own. All these Song people just judged him and blamed him for just being who he was brought up to be. He is a tragic figure, completely misrepresented in this version.

True but that is not a cast comparison - the beard is Huang Laoxie's signature look - it is like making Pokemon blue instead of yellow. I don't mind zipping through the plot bc I read the book a gazillion times but I feel most of the characters are MIA.

Lol - I watch a few episodes of this and then I go bounce back to the 1983 version to remind myself how great the story really is... But I do like how ZYW played Huang Laoxie. I just agree with netizens that he is not Huang Laoxie without the beard.

Exactly! Even my Mainland friends use Canto names when they talk about HK actors. Like Lau Tak-wah and Leung Chiu-wai sound so lame in Mando. And I don't even answer if they try to call me by my name in Mando bc I am too busy cringing! All the names in this show are so much more cool in Canto.
