It does sound similar but considering that BFB has been adapted, I would assume if there is plagiarism, there would be lawsuits already. Plus it depends on whether Youku did its due diligence properly on the IP.

Since I didn't read either novel I can't comment specifically. Plagiarism is hard to prove unless lines are copied word for word. That is why in the case of TMOPB it was never proven bc they only copied ideas and some character names or titles but in the case of Princess Agents it was proven bc the writer copied phrases word for word almost. Its kind of sad bc the Princess Agent story is very different from Pearl Eclipse but the author stupidly obviously copied a few paragraphs directly and that is what busted her. Had she took the effort to rephrase it, she'd probably have gotten away with it. So I guess the question is when you compare the intros of the two stories, are there word for word similarities or are they more general?

Ma Yili is truly talented but she is dreadfully mis-cast here. It is not fair to ask someone her age to play someone in their mid-20s. They compound it by also casting someone that age to play Jiang Ni. Poor Bai Yu looks like he has two mothers instead of a sister and a potential love interest. Ma Yili's disastrous wig with the bangs makes her really look like an older woman trying desperately to look young. I am hanging on by the edge of my fingernails at this point and only for lack of anything else to watch.

What is really happening is Youku is a laggard among the top streaming platforms. They only have `70mm paying subscribers relative to Tencent and iQiyi at `110-120mm each. All 3 platforms depend on advertising for half their revenue. Youku and iQiyi both have great pipelines this year and Tencent has a crappy pipeline (unless the two big stalled BLs get to air). There is fierce competition going on as Tencent is fighting to defend its market share and stem subscriber loss. It also has a big and expensive S+ xianxia waiting in the wings to air this year that has to compete for advertisers and subscribers. As a result of this intense competition in a year of tight ad budgets due to a weak economy all players are playing dirty and fanning the flames of overzealous fans. I won't say much more bc I genuinely have zero interest in fan wars or wars of any sort.

Douban is actually the only site I use consistently for drama reviews. I don't really care about the rating so much but I find there are really excellent and insightful comments and reviews on there. There is also a lot of dross which I simply ignore. As for the rating, it is actually quite consistent within genres. Like the user base don't like xianxias in general but they tend to differentiate well between them as in the better xianxias still get higher ratings. I don't let ratings affect my enjoyment of any drama just like there are many dramas I don't enjoy and don't hesitate to rate low relative to Douban or MDL. In the end it is about your personal experience no one has the right to tell you your own rating is too high or too low.

Douban panned both of those dramas because of plagiarism scandals. TMOPB was based on a novel that got accused of plagiarising an obscure BL novel after TMOPB became a hit. The Douban rating was really high but nosedived to something like 3 after that before recovering to the current rating which is still well below what it was at opening. And WRTW stole entire arcs from Royal Nirvana including dialogue lines from it. They fooled international audiences bc Royal Nirvana was not popular outside of China but mainland audiences called it out right away and never respected it as a result. I watched both dramas and to me there is no question that WRTW shamelessly stole from Royal Nirvana. I enjoyed parts of it anyway but think it totally deserves to be spanked by Douban.

I think Love and Destiny is the highest rated xianxia that I know of at 8.3. TMOPB was higher before the plagiarism scandal broke out.

Agree not the worst and you are totally right about IS. I also dropped it also for that and many other reasons. But this kind of stuff affects the overall rating and I don't think it is that unfair that it does. We can only hope those two show improvement in coming episodes.
