Well to be fair, not all of the acting is good - I think both SML and SFL are obvious weak links and miscast. Youku wants to promote these young actors but I think they are not ready yet for their roles. Also they opened the rating quite early and right after a bad arc. If I had to rate the second arc on a standalone basis I wouldn't rate it high either. But if it goes back to the level of the first arc in the coming episodes the Douban score probably improves quite a bit. I think that is why Youku opened the rating early - they must have confidence it will go up. It is a highly watched drama and yet there are only 60k votes so far.

Villains are much more interesting roles - it is actually much easier to make an impact as a villain than the standard boring goody-goody FL. Luo Yunxi made his name early in his career playing a villain.

Starry Love did ok - 7.2.

The actor needs to win an award for how she manages to do a boring villain. It is quite a rare and unappreciated achievement.

Douban's least favoured genre is xianxia so I kind of expected this.

Edited after I rewatched - I think it says in Ep 23 Zhang Sicheng was adopted. And he has a photo of himself with his mom where he cuts out her face and places it over the drawings of the women he killed. So he definitely has mommy issues. They also said he went to vocational school and is a land surveyor. That is why I feel the art connection is not made or explained.

They are cousins who grew up together. There shouldn't be a romantic relationship between them. They just intefere with each others lives the way family tends to do.

I don’t think it was answered directly other than he was an adopted orphan And his association with paintings in general doesn’t fit his profile as a killer. It suggests a more sophisticated , Westernized and refined person than a construction enginee or whatever he was.
