At what point did Ting Yun and Zhao Ling think it was safe to leave Madam Fu alone in the Fu house with her POS…
All these have been addressed in my comment... I mentioned Madam Zou, Madam Yu and Lady Wu not just to compare their individual circumstances with Madam Fu's, but to also illustrate the larger social structure the drama repeatedly shows us. If women with very different personalities, strengths and circumstances are still constrained by the same society. The fact that they don't have economic means is because of the societal structure...they are capable but women in that time couldn't go out and work for themselves.
The reasons for her staying weren't exhausted up until that episode...FTY's marriage and her brother choosing to not give imperial exams happened in and around that time.
Also as I previously said having technical means to leave or even having no reason to stay...doesnt always translate into psychological readiness and strength to handle the consequences bith personal and social of leaving.

I respect your opinion but don't agree with it, and the following comment is for other MDL users on why this is not a plot hole according to me.

Madam Fu described herself as a weak woman in the beginning of the drama, and as her children gradually moved away from those social conventions, she slowly gained the courage to leave. Strength doesn't always come from defiance or standing up against one person, i.e. her husband. Strength can also mean defying social conventions, walking away, and making choices that may hurt or disappoint the people you love.

Here, she may have been able to stand up to her husband, but she didn't yet have the courage to stand up to the larger social structure and conventions she had lived with for years. The many examples I have shared are meant to illustrate exactly that. Arguing that she wasn't a weak woman simply because she stood up to her husband is, to me, looking at only one aspect of her character.
She also wasn't this eloquent or assertive around Grandma Fu earlier in the drama, which to me clearly shows her character evolution — from a woman who accepted her circumstances to someone who gradually found the courage to stand up for herself.

And while FTY may have been considered dead on paper, everyone around them knew her to be FTY, hence the whole situation in the capital, which did happen subsequently. Likewise, her son's marriage may have been settled, but he was still sitting for the imperial examinations, and his career progression was still dependent on the Fu family's reputation. So I don't think Madam Fu's concerns about social conventions simply disappeared because her children were married.

That is why I don't see her staying as a plot hole. Others may find her character motivation insufficiently convincing, and that's their POV. But for me, the drama has provided enough context — historically, socially, and through Madam Fu's own character development — to make her choices coherent.

Also, I mentioned Madam Zou, Madam Yu and Lady Wu not just to compare their individual circumstances with Madam Fu's, but to also illustrate the larger social structure the drama repeatedly shows us. If women with very different personalities, strengths and circumstances are still constrained by the same society, I think those examples are relevant when judging whether Madam Fu's choices are plausible.

The drama is set in ancient times not in today's world...women staying if she has feelings for a man is something of a modern lens...in drama's world setting, marriage was majority of time for convenience, status, and societal reasons, not love....

Madam Fu originally comes from a merchant family while Fu family had officials...merchant were not treated with same respect as official then...she stayed and supported him for his career, hope for better future for her children...even FTY needed ZL to navigate official circles as clearly mentioned in earlier episodes...
If she had written the divorce letter on day 1 FTY wouldn't have been able to marry, she would be branded as daughter of a woman who left her husband...Fu family's saving grace were there chastity arches one of !adamZou, second of old lady, third of FTY's mother...the Fu family men could sit for imperial exams because of that...if she had left , her son wouldnt be able to get an offical post...
And she didnt stay with her husband in capital..she stayed with the Fu family in huaying and lived like all women did at that time..
And his mistreatment of her started around the wedding episodes...previously they minded there own businesses...because of this, Madam Fu assumed he wouldn't hurt her as he needed her financially and for reputation...
And going by your logic... why didn't Madam Zou leave? She had nothing to lose by leaving plus she was a stronger character than Madam Fu? Why is Lady Wu being paraded around and being checked out? And why is the calculating more intelligent Madam Yu staying without love? Because no matter how independant one is, one still has to live within a soceity and the society didn't operate in their favour..

Also Madam Fu died not because she chose to stay...she died because Yu family wanted to get ZL out of picture and the only 2 targets would be FTY or her mother, and out of the 2 Yu family targetted her mother...Mr.Fu wouldn't have done anything if Yu family hadn't backed him..and even if Fu didnt kill her, they would have found another way even if she had stayed with ZL's family...by making her death in this way it was most coherent considering the social structure, the psychology of Madam Fu's character the drama had built up until that episode

I am glad this drama didn't project a modern women in ancient world and rather showed realistically how constrained the women were then

This is one of the episode where a psychologist who had support, knew everything ,yet stayed in an abusive relationship in today's world

There are many todays world example of educated knowledgable women with resources staying too long, everyone is asking same of Kanye Wests current wife Bianca Censori....there are many exmples in today's world itself...

The whole drama is set in ancient times where women were oppressed and didn't have same rules and freedom...even FTY is being constantly mocked for not having married at 24....also Madam Fu's circumstances were not the same, in ep1 she stayed because of old lady Fu, for her son's and daughter's future, she continued to stay hoping to reunit with her daughter plus shehad been brainwashed on thats how society was because that was how society was at tht time...

What changed? FTY was married now, she had backing of ZL, her other son was happy giving up on imperial exams...Fu family's honour did not matter anymore..
grandma killing FTY broke her..seeing her alive again reawakened her , as evidenced when she said to FTY '.dont become a weak woman like me'..seeing them back in capital and ZL's loyalty gave her the courage to stand up for herself...

Also the problem doesn't end after separation..there is something called post separation abuse as well...sometimes from the person they separated, but also from the society, their social cirles amd implications on her children...seeing ZL and FTY facing stuffs together, even her son choosing to give up on status gave her couruage , and hope that her children wouldn't be bothered by society's conventions and will live a happy life..She finally felt safe , had courage and hope for herself and her children and made that decision.
Leaving is not always about having technical means or legal rights, it is also about psychological readiness and societal freedom.
I don't agree with your opinion that this was a plot hole or lazy writing...
So far this drama including Madam Fu reflected real world scenarios..and I'm glad they scriptwriter showed it as it is...because the Qs you are asking is what the victims ask themselves "why did I stay for so long"...and instead of making a statement of "one should have left" , I choose to support the person whenever they choose to leave..
I am glad this drama showed the complex dynamics at play by coherent writing of character and their chocies throughout.

Unfortunate thing is, it happens even now...women keep forgiving and giving chances or assuming it won't go beyond a point and then end up in similar situation and fate

Whenever Madam Yu goes to meet old Empress lady her dress is similar to the male officials robes. Any particular reason for the choice?

Title The Road to Splendor Spoiler
Yes...you are right...ZL amd FTY 's rise to power is to protect themselves and ones they love...they are not intersted…
I am actually enjoying it...it is difficult to stay morally right when faced with these many powerful enemies...and they are doing the best...
I don't find the FL whining or suffering...she is mourning her mother's death...she is still interesting...the whole Imperial tombstone plan was hers and she even took punishment for it...and in ep29 she says "I can protect you too" ...both ZL and FTY have stayed together, worked together to reach here

Adding to the comments..Madam Fu had mentioned when she was giving blessing to ZL that Mr.Fu wouldn't hurt her as filial piety and family ties is what kept him valid as an official..and he has shown to be cowardly till now...even Mr.Fu wouldn't have done this if he didn't have Yu backing him or so he thought...
Foolish fellow...no wonder Fu family had ti depend on chastity arches with such a guy

The whole problem was started by YJX...he assumed FY would be humble, and they have same interests, he never tried to find out about her...and instead of speaking honestly about it he created the whole mess...his mother agreed to his request of marrying FY not because FTY was accused, she agreed because he promised to sit for imperial exams and give his best...I guess he subconsciously knew FTY was awesome and created the whole mess because he didn't want anyone else to have her and knew that Zou guy was a loser...he cant stand it now knowing ZL and FTY have everything he ever wanted...

Have to say, this drama commentors are very civil and genuine...we can all talk so openly, praise the good characters in villian without getting attacked, call out the weakness in the leads...it is not all black and white and villianize the villian, hero worship the leads..
Thank you all for this genuine and intellectually honourable viewing experience❤️❤️ drama is top-notch and being able to discuss it candidly really elevates the whole experience 😀
