Without CYY I think they could have worked as a couple. Firstly, they both fully trusted each other. Secondly, they would risk their lives to protect each other. Lastly, they're both deeply loyal. While it troubles her that he's a bit of a loose cannon, he does pull it together and manages to salvage the situation and come out on top.
