Does anybody have suggestions on where to watch new J-dramas with subs in high quality? I'm down with paid services…
Netflix US is getting more and more, and we just have to keep requesting titles in Viki for them to start carrying more J-dramas. I did see that Amazon Prime US has two new J-channels now, but they're really only anime and horror stuff, which I'm not into.
I'm so happy to see this recap of an awesome J-drama, (which should get WAY more attention on here than they do!) This story is totally worth your time - I loved it. Thanks for the article!
I straight up ugly cried at the end, like unabashedly weeping my eyes out, and I'm not even embarrassed. The ending was so powerful and sad and beautiful all at the same time.
I love watching Kento and Tao act together, they might be my favorite acting pair. And honestly after one specific scene there should be no doubt as to why Yamaken is an A-lister and a huge star - he just simply knocked it out of the damn park.
100%! - there are just a few things left of his that I haven't seen yet (or I can't find subs for.) He's got an excellent acting range. What's your fave bad boy role he's done? (Mine is Shiro demo Kuro demonai Sekai de, Panda wa Warau.)
It was an interesting history lesson, for sure. I didn't think it was "super fun hilarity" but I thought it had…
Both of those are on Netflix in the US. (Viki doesn't have nearly enough J-dramas to suit me but they do have a few.) I have lots more recommendations - just let me know when you're ready for them.

Totally agree about the cautionary tale part and how it was portrayed in The Naked Director. Absurdity is absolutely the right word as well as ugly. And it was about even more than that - especially with the FL lead and her family history. There was just so much there. I haven't seen Extracurricular so I can't comment on that one.
Have you seen either River's Edge or Million Yen Women? Both very mature and dark dramas but both are brilliant in their own ways. I had to watch River's Edge twice - several years apart - to really appreciate what it was saying. I thought Million Yen Women was genius the very first time I watched it.
I've taken a break from K-dramas for now and am mostly watching Japanese dramas and films and they continue to amaze me with how they tell human stories. I'm sorry that you've found it hard to watch J-dramas but I'm hoping that you'll find some you like. Let me know if you'd like a list of ones that might fit your criteria. By the way, Yokohama Ryusei is a huge, huge favorite of mine as well and I've watched *almost* everything he's been in so far. His newest drama, Kikazaru Koi niwa Riyuu ga Atte, just finished and it. was. wonderful (imo.) Looking at your list, I think you might like it.
