He accidentally absorbed some of Shang Gu's spiritual power remaining(?). He spent thousands of years cultivated that spiritual energy. From my perspective, I think it might be the core. Shang Gu's spiritual core was basically gone like she was turned into ashes. Therefore, Gu Jun must have used his own spiritual core to cultivate it. When he transferred it to Hou Chi, it also means that he transferred his spiritual core to her. Immortal without a core, yeah you know what I mean.
