i read (most of) the novel a while back, although i can't really remember most of it, but i appreciate that if…
You make a good point. I think because I read the novel before watching the drama, I'm able to appreciate it more. It's interesting to see the tweaks they made, how everything unfolds (in like a much faster pace btw - literally like 10 chapters in a 30 min episode) but still have that context.
I can see how some novel lovers are not fond of the changes, or those who haven't read it are not fans of the drama too. Would've been nicer to have more background/introduction for the character motivations.
LOL HY is more bold and shameless and XJ is more gentle and warm in the drama compared to the novel. I was surprised to see them tweak parts of the script for the leads (i.e. when HY asked XJ to fill in her brows to having him win her the whip as a prize. Whereas in the novel, XJ took the initiative to do it - HY wouldn't dare to ask haha). Not hating it though, I can see how it works for the fast pacing drama.
They did a good job with the birthday wish scene, it really captures that melancholy feel and yearning HY has always had her whole life, to have someone come for just her.
When she said she likes the moon, what did she mean? Is it a word pun? I know she mean't she liked Xaio Jue, but…
The moon represents Xiao Jue, her light and hope. He was always there for her when she needed it (whether it was in her first life or after her 'rebirth'). In the novel, she actually wanted to take her own life (when she was blind) at the temple. But he saved her and gave her the candy and words of comfort. At the time she asked him about the moon and how it looked - that's where the whole 'moon' theme stemmed from. He was the moon that shone its light on her.
Chu Zhao is the sml. He can get quite annoying later on
It’s always a triangle with one person having it one sided lol. I agree I preferred the way things played out in the novel in terms of romance, they gave Chu Zhao more of a role here in both the plot and romantic department. We don’t need two guys fighting over her lol, prob the one change I am not crazy about in this adaptation

He did have feelings for her but his motives were most important to him. It was always his own interests and survival that were priority. He also felt that they were from two worlds (her being righteous and bright, him in the darkness). Plus there was no point since he knew she always loved XJ. If you read the extra chapters where they bump into each other yrs later you will see he couldn't let go, and still had feelings for her.
The things he said or did may seem insincere but I feel like he suppressed a lot of his genuine feelings.
He is a tragic character and going down the path he chose, he probably never considered receiving love. He even lost Yin Xiang who loved him most.

Sad that they are making him that way because that wasn’t the case in the novel, he never went out of his way to intervene. Guess they wanted to amp up the love triangle
when He Yan asked Xiao Jue about the moon at the monastery, did she know his identity?
No she had no idea. Only after meeting him again in her “second life” after awakening in a new body and joining the army and getting to know XJ, that she found out it was him who saved her at the temple
XJ actually have 2 personal guards and 1 shadow guards. all are top tier loyalty and their relationships are master/servant.Feinu…
They definitely tweaked Feinu’s character here. He is pretty reserved and chic in the book, and much more careful. Given his personality in the drama, I feel like they merged Feinu and XJ’s other guard named Chiwu together
👏 👏 👏 yes he touched her bare skin, he needs to take typical C-drama style responsibility, means marriage…
Haha it’s really hard because the original is so good and well loved for a reason. This is typically the case for any original story, you can never beat it. I have my gripes about the drama but I try to remind myself to appreciate them as standalone stories. Like many, I’ve waited for this drama for a long time and heard about some of the major changes beforehand so I knew there was no point in comparing. I think the most important thing is that they maintain the pacing and main events until the end and don’t do anything drastic to butcher the ending like some dramas do.
I envisioned ZY and CL as the leads while reading the novel so I already loved them together before this drama aired. So to see them doing a good job portraying their roles and having good chemistry make it a great watch.
Hope you enjoy the novel as much as many of us did! I def have to reread it after
With the number of times XJ has helped apply medicine for HY, he has to marry her at this point hahaha.
They really sped up the romantic development in the adaptation, which as a novel reader, I can still enjoy (although I do laugh inside thinking about how the novel version of XJ would respond to that especially early on, being a man of propriety).
I dunno how my other fellow novel readers feel but it is cool to see all the main scenes play out on screen. I can see how they have combined some roles and made scenes short and compact. Definitely straight to the point, which is probably helpful to keep viewers engaged. I do wish they allowed more than 40 eps for stories like these to have more time to tell the details and flesh things out more, and to have smoother transitions in scenes. But I think with the limitations we have, this is (so far) good enough
Saw the leads promoting the drama in a variety show (which I believe they filmed before the drama aired): https://youtu.be/VMQJgSndvIU?si=cxXobVoE3jnTHJ0_It…
Yeah I figured that trailer where they fight together would be the final one considering HY dons a nice armor (fitting of a general, so this should be after the emperor bestows her a title)

I initially thought this but I think ZY said “大结局” which is the end in Chinese. But then again, it could be one of the several scenes in the last episode. Anyway we shall find out!
It seems like they basically spoiled the ending scene (shown within the first 10min and it showcases HY and XJ riding their horses under a moonlight, on their way somewhere far? And share a kiss). I don’t recall such a scene in the novel, wondering if this is the part that happens before they go off to fight again. Because in the novel, HY, XJ and Yan He (their classmate from school who is also a general) each go to a different city to fight against the enemies. Basically the final battle. I guess we will see! But surprised they already spoiled the ending lol
