I think they couldâve given a little more backstory or at least not flip between flashbacks and the current scenes so much to the point of it being choppy. But this was probably their way of slowly showing what happened in the past perhaps? Maybe to keep up the mystery? Hopefully things will flow better as the story goes on!
First impressions from someone who read the novel below
Despite my gripes on the choppiness/editing, I can see why they took this approach with the adaptation. The novel was a slow burn, and I mean slow burn, which may not have worked as well on screen for the viewerâs pleasure especially if they have no context from the main story. The little flashbacks gave just enough of the main point to tell the backstory.
So after digesting it all, I am trying to keep an open mind. All I hope for is that they tell the story well from beginning to end. I know the romance and love triangles will be more exaggerated, which Iâm not crazy about but again it is a drama - and they thrive off of these angsty tropes. So I can see why they made these adjustments.
I want to highlight the things I am enjoying - the cast. They did a very good job with the cast (imho). From HY to XJ, to He Ru Fei, Liu Bu Wang, Wang Ba and Xiao Mai. I also liked the choices for Xu Jing Fu (loved him in Lost You Forever, he has the stage presence) and Chu Zhao is being portrayed quite well. Really enjoying ZYâs portrayal of HY so far, her spunk and cleverness is fun to see. The action scenes were pretty decent too. So I am trying to keep the novel and drama separate and will see how things play out!
Lastly the OST is growing on me, especially the outro by Zhou Shen (obvi).
The novel had HE for the main couple .And there is love triangle between ml x fl x sml but it wasn't heavy ,the…
Ah I think it was very briefly touched on in a trailer, I had a feeling this was the case but wasnât sure. Not sure how I feel about that. I do know they like to use love triangles a lot on screen so also not surprised. I do prefer the way things played out in the novel because it wasnât your typical showdown between ML and SML you know? More slow burn and subtle in terms of romance
Some stan culture folks act like any criticism of their fav shows is like blasphemy & act like a cult but…
I agree, I think we can all provide constructive criticism on forums like these so long as we do not drag real life ppl into it. Adaptations will never be 100% the same, and I knew that going into the drama (LOVED the novel). But hoping they will be able to deliver the main scenes and not rush and give abrupt endings like many of the predecessors
Great first episode but why is the female lead still so innocent after so much hardship? I was hoping sheâd…
Her character is described as cheerful but she is not innocent/naive. She hides her true thoughts and even pain behind a smile. She can be ruthless to enemies if needed
If I remember well, it was Cheng Lisu, so they had to pick a different actor and reshoot all the scenes he was…
So even with AI they had to reshoot? Wasnât sure how it worked, of the nee actor had to film certain scenes showing certain expressions to make it realistic. So sad, i wish the scandal/drama didnât happen with the original actor
Glad you are able to enjoy it as a standalone, but some other non-readers felt it was rushed. Did you feel that?…
Thanks for sharing! I do agree that the removal of some of the story including her rebirth and marriage works fine. I am also not too bothered by how characters miraculously survive etc because it happens with every drama - a main character arc haha (-cue the satire from A Dream Within a Dream-). I just hope they donât cut out or rush important details that are needed for the main plot, and the flow works fine from beginning to end. My biggest gripe is when dramas just rush towards the latter half of the show or when they cut too much to the point it feels choppy
