The road of life

Finally in 2026 we have a solidly written (for the most part) idol period drama that balances both the female and male leads' stories, telling a compelling tale of betrayal, coming of age, redemption, heartache and triumph on the road of life. Set in a generic Ming dynasty setting, a time generally quite repressive of women, The Road to Splendor follows young Fu Tingyun as she navigates through various obstacles in life, forging a deep bond with the salt bandit Zhao Ling. Together, they rise from the dust of poverty to the heights of power and learn what is truly important in life.

Although the writing falters in the latter portions in the Capital, favoring melodrama and some out of character moments, overall the story and characters hold through to the end. Wen Zhengrong gives a powerful performance as Madam Yu, whose character serves as a marvelous foil to Deng Enxi's Tingyun. Shot in many cases on location, this drama feels lived in and real, with a marvelous supporting cast of characters with their own poignant stories to tell.

The road to splendor is but an empty dream. What truly matters is the people you meet along the way - your friends and family - and staying true to yourself, to them, and to all that is good in the world.
