This is a great watch. This is like other xianxia drama that I’ve watched but also feels slightly different. The kind of slight difference that sets it apart from other xianxia. (Funny how a to people comment on how it’s different from other xianxia.) It shares all the major similarities with the xianxia genre but for me what set this drama apart is how they added a comical pacing to the drama which breaks up the traditionally serious and extremely “fairy”-like presentation of xianxia. And this comical element isn’t over done, it’s weaved in thru the main leads portrayal, interaction, and character development. And it works (it’s acceptable) without being overly cheesy exactly because it’s portrayed to us from the getgo that the fairy is extremely young for fairy standards, the lowest ranked fairies, and that she’s weak and powerless because of her damaged roots that hinders her cultivation. And on the other hand is the ml who’s much older, the cruel ruthless moon supreme, one of the most powerful beings on their universe, but devoid of any emotion or conscience (literally was plucked out of him.)

The plot is interesting without being too complicated or too simple. There are no backstabbing or dumb misunderstanding that would make this drama unbearable to watch and cliched. Character development is written very well for many characters besides the main leads (Chang heng, Dan yin, and Jie li). Even though the plot is rather straightforward, it’s probably one of the harder dramas for them to act in. Many characters need to act more than one role ( a complete opposite from their original role.) For the ml, major inherent changes in his character literally made him a new person (he’s more himself than he ever was).

The music and soundtrack is awesome. Sounds original and unique, scary, beautiful , and made the scenes more engaging. For example the folk song that was sang by the villagers of the moon tribe when they stood vigil for their lost ones. That made the scene much more sad and beautiful.

And lastly Dylan wang fit his role very well. From his looks to his acting. And I’m not talking about his good looks. I’m talking about how his mean cold angular features fit the face of the evil and cruel moon supreme. Most xianxia has feminine male paired with beautiful goddess which is how xianxia are. But this drama is different and the ml is drastically different. Here we have the ml bring to our eyes a scary and crazy moon supreme, whose piercing cold eyes convey nothing but fury, hatred, and the desire to slaughter.

Hmmm I started watching this drama because I was very bored and had nothing else to do. When I saw karry wang is one of the leads I assumed it wasn’t going to be very good. I was one of those who held a prejudice that idols can’t act. I also didn’t like his acting from chusen that’s the only one I remember him in. As such, I had extremely low expectations for this drama. I was only going to spare 5 or 10 minutes of my time if it wasn’t good. Maybe because I wasn’t expecting much …this drama hit me really hard and I enjoyed it a lot . It was intense and fast paced without feeling rushed. For me, the plot holes didn’t seem evident until I watched it the second time. It was fast paced enough so that for the most part I was able to overlook small plot holes because I was more concern with “what will happen next” than “is this realistic”. Didn’t really have the time to spare for that

Like what people commented below, karry wang’s acting isn’t perfect. But for the most part I think he acted his role very well. There were parts that feels a little unpolished. But compared to his acting from 2015 and the drama eagles and youngster (which I recently skimmed thru a bit) I think he’s improved. I also found out that he graduated from acting school recently in 2021. He more or less just started his acting career. He definitely have room for more improvement. I found it hard to understand comments that say he should never get another acting role. It sounds way to harsh for someone who just started acting seriously and who even went to school for it.

My dad never watch mainland Chinese dramas. But he got hooked to this one and enjoyed it. It’s definitely a great watch.

I watched his drama Be Reborn and I enjoyed it a lot. His acting improved since I last watched him in the drama Chusen (he was a kid in this drama and for some reason I remember I was sort of annoyed with his acting 🤔). I’m looking forward to his movie Fallen bridge. 😊

This drama is unexpectedly very good. Mind gripping and intense like people said. I gave it a try and was going to only watch ep 1 but that was it just 5 min in the drama quickly grabbed my attention. No where in any episode I want to pause or skip. I couldn’t even stop lol and go to bed. I didn’t complete it yet. But even if the ending isn’t good, just the first case was good enough for me to give it a high rating. So intense. I’m not a fan of karry wang, but his performance in this drama was above my expectations, very good very convincing, very complicated. I saw many instances where he shows fear, shock, and collective calm all in one moment. 8.4 rating isn’t bad but I believe it deserves much higher closer to 8.7 to 9.0 🤔🤔

I’ve never watched any of her dramas. I’m watching the first episode of jun jiu Ling and I’m awed by how beautiful she is. I don’t know if it’s just me, but her expression and reaction when she discovered her face was swapped remind me of Jennifer Lawrence in the hunger games... 😲

I believe they were his engagement presents to her. He crashed into her engagement party with Li shixiong. A little before he barged in, we see two servants reading the list of engagement presents (dowry?) that were exchanged between Li shixiong’s family and Xiao Man’s family. Xiao Qian brought nothing for his engagement to Xiao Man. I think he meant to catch two geese, but made do with 2 goose eggs instead.

The drama is actually pretty enjoyable and funny. The drama starts out with a lot of misunderstandings, lack of communication, and distrust, but that’s where character development comes in. The characters start out as teenagers. They react to problems childishly/irresponsibly, but they would eventually grow up to become what they want to become.

Before I start watching this drama I was rewatching The Story of Minglan (must be one of the most accurate portrayal of class, social, gender, and family structure and struggles). It’s set in the same dynasty, the Song Dynasty. So I actually watched the drama with better understanding of the the problems that arise between the male and female lead. They came from the opposite side of the social spectrum. The male lead is from the imperial family, the capital, brought up strictly, trapped, and deprived. The female lead is from a semi-scholarly/ farmer class, a country pumpkin, brought up with a lot of freedom, but social and gender rules caught up to her and she’s forced to learn her place in the bigger city. She’s struggling to find her place in a ever changing environment that’s out of her control. And it doesn’t help that the male lead is one of the factors that’s changing her world. If I should compare, her social position is much worse than Minglan, who came from a scholarly landed gentry class and whose father was promoted to 5th rank minister(?) in the capital). Even though Minglan is from such a good family, she’s still seen unfit to be the wife of a future duke. And this drama, the female lead, Xie Xiao Man, must struggle to become the wife of a prince (at first unwillingly). Xiao Man isn’t your strongest female lead, but she’s a strong female at heart, a brave free soul raised in her beloved hometown, Yu Yang Li (?). It might be frustrating to watch, but I also found the misunderstandings funny because I saw them coming and I wonder how they’d overcome them.

This is definitely a romance drama and romance might not be everyone’s cup of tea. I don’t think the current rating does it justice. The pacing of the plot was fine. The characters are likable (root worthy). There’s no fillers. I think the drama executed what it meant to do wonderfully. :)

Yes I also agree. The characters started out as teenagers hence they were childish, but that made room for a lot of character development. Not just the main leads, but for the side couple, cousin Su Wei and Yan Bo Yang, and another supporting character, Shen Yan.

I like how he’s taking different types of roles. Every role he takes is more or less different from his previous roles.

I totally agree with you. I was also afraid I was saying something controversial but I also didn’t think the drama was bl. Like what you said there were a lot of hinting, like poems etc, but when most of those hints occur is when they were not being serious or just joking around. To me I think it’s just the scriptwriter paying tribute to the original novel. I don’t know if it’s true but i read somewhere that the scriptwriter is a wuxia fan. I watched woh in a friendship, brotherhood, same martial sect brothers kind of light. A character’s martial sect is like their second family. In this way, it would explain why zhou zhe shu is attracted to chengling (he’s similar to his shifu’s son) and it would explain why wen kexing is attracted to zhou zhe shu (he is his shixiong aka same sect older brother ).

I’m not a fan of bl and I didn’t gave the drama a try because it’s bl. Instead i enjoyed the main plot and sub plot , the backstory of the male lead Zhou zhe shu (the part where he disguised himself as a homeless man), the character development of supporting characters like ah xiang, cao weining, yan gui, and so many others, the evilness of Zhao Jing (the different portrayal of his external self vs his internal self), the swordplay and fights (I actuaally craved for more), the wuxia element (down to earth quality, a little rustic, a man of his word, a man of his sword, a man vs the world), and so on. I loved yan gui and yu qiu feng’s story. It reminds me of the Latin quote “thus, I can live neither with you, nor without you.” The sound track and songs are beautiful and fitting. It was a very enjoyable experience overall .

From his acting I couldn’t tell he only have 2 years of acting experience with no prior training or acting experience prior to joining show biz. Really impressed with his acting so far. There’s some awkwardness in his most recent drama Love in between(only some) but there were a lot of occasions where he portrayed his character really well. I can’t wait to see him in more dramas and grow from them :)

I actually liked the drama a lot. Honestly i wasn’t expecting anything from this drama when I started. I was thinking of quitting after watching 10 minutes of it. But I was instantly hooked. I watched this in late July so after I read people’s reviews on it and the disappointing ending I braced myself for the worst kind of ending , an ending as bad as the killing of three thousand crows. The ending could have been better. They cut a lot of good fighting scenes. But the ending was still acceptable, not far fetched. It was satisfactory but could have been more amazing. I watch a Chinese review of it on YouTube and it explains really well what was exceptional about this drama and why it stood out on douban. Unlike other wuxia drama with young cast that had the shell of a wuxia story, this one was a legit wuxia with the jianghu fleshed out (different sects, their secrets, and motives). https://youtu.be/dblCVNSlmrI

I recognized him (and his voice) from Royal Nirvana. When I began watching The killing of three thousand crows, my first impression is that his looks doesn’t fit his role. He has somewhat manly features with a boyish tinge when he smiles. I think they over-powdered his face white so that he looks more celestial which makes him look kind of weird in certain angle. I started out uncomfortable about his makeup/looks but his acting won me over. I was amazed how well he pulled the role off. After I’m done with the show, I can’t imagine anyone else as fu jiu yun (sadly I cant say the same for the actress zhao Lusi in that show..... her performance wasn’t convincing enough...she couldn’t pull a zhao liying feat...at least not yet...but of course that’s just my opinion) I hope he gets more roles!!! I really enjoyed watching his performance :)

Haha I actually forgot most of what I watched. I had a hard time recalling the other cases so I commented on the only case I remembered. Yeah I agree the train case in the vampire cases aren’t bad. The fossil clue is a nice misdirection. :)

I think the female lead is mortal. From what I understand from the drama mortals can learn magic/ cultivate too. After the female lead’s country was taken over, the people of her country were mistreated. The evil country that worships demons would capture her people as food/ sacrifice to their demon god.

I remember reading somewhere that this is character driven story rather plot driven. And I agree. The story is rather simple once you get past a couple episodes:a country is destroyed and the only survivor (of the imperial family) seeks vengeance (that’s the basic story). What made it an interesting watch is that an observer decides to intervene in this story and complications arise and when there’s complications there’s a much interesting story. The mechanics of the revenge is pretty straight forward and not well thought. I find myself asking the female lead where’s your back up plan, where’s your escape plan if your mission fails. What drives the plot is the female lead’s revenge and the mystery surrounding the observer who decided to intervene. This drama isn’t going to suit everyone’s taste. For me the feelings of yearning and longing attracts me to the drama. A longing of a thousand years....
