I am American and do not speak Mandarin, but have watched enough cdramas that when the words "I love you" popped up on my screen, I was, like, what? And even before I started being able to make the distinction between the Mandarin I like you and I love you, I knew that when they say, "Wǒ xǐhuān nǐ" they mean, I like-like you. :)

I do think the father seems to care about ML's mother, but you're right. He likely was motivated by her shares. He sucks and she's weak.

@Nauriya--He absolutely has done bad things to ML. After spying on him, he did a live TV interview in which he plagiarized ML's hotel design concept and after ML won the bid, he stopped the supply chain of materials ML needed for the project by locking down all of the vendors in sole provider contracts so ML's company would be forced to collaborate with his. He's dirty. Maybe not as dirty as his father, but his hands are not clean.

I also did a rewatch on Viki, where ML tells him to not let his one-sided love affect Xiu, which I think is a bit more forceful than wishful thinking, which infers some sort of hope? Maybe I'm reading too much into this, lol.

The scenes with ML and his father make me so sad for him because he was clearly loved. That living room was filled with children's stuff. After his father's death, Yu's life drastically changed and he spent every moment wanting to clear his father's name, which is a LOT for one so young. But while he is by no means perfect, he didn't grow up to be a poisonous snake who doesn't hesitate to resort to underhanded business tactics to harm others.

It is a spectacular series!

I get triggered the same way when people say that Sang Yan "stalked" Yi Fan when she moved away when he was literally the only person on planet Earth who was making sure she was okay. And she wept tears of joy when she found his treasure box full of ticket stubs and clips of her writing.
