She has decided to follow him to the battlefields towards the end with their son in the US. Due to the dangers at the city where he had to fight, he tricked her to send her away to safety in the US. What I mean by too late is they have not had time to enjoy each other’s company in happiness. He was wounded and captured whilst she was in the US with their son without the child knowing the existence of his dad. The open ending of the novel is really heartbreaking where she was reading the news that the ML may be dead whilst sobbing and remembering of a conversation she had with him when he told her that he only loves one woman in his life and it is her and their child looking at her staring at the ML photo in the newspaper. The child then asked her who the man was and to which she told him that it was his dad.

They definitely have trust and communication issues. It is quite draining to watch actually. In the novel, it is even more heartbreaking as she has hated him all along until towards the end when she realized of his true and deep love for her and it is too late.

I read the novel a while ago so I don't recall of the SFL being a snake.

I think the producers may have followed this scene as in the novel (i.e FL found out that the ML killed the second ML and then ran away). In the novel, their love is really heartbreaking where they almost had no moments of happiness.
