Ok to clarify: Yes the novel ML is Yu Mo but u can CLEARLY see that Ying Yuan is the ML here. Why? Even in the novel ALL of Yan Dan's important turning points/moments are because of YingYuan. Yu Mo was just quietly by her side. Like some sort of third wheel. It might work in novel form and move people but such a plot will BE VERY boring adapting it to a drama and this quietly by her side plot WON'T work. At least it won't become popular like it is now. When audience watch xianxia drama, We are looking for that heaven moving, emotionally abusive/oppressive (or nue) storyline with all the iconic melodrama of a xianxia work. A romance that's just calm like water with no significant moving parts is VERY boring on the big screen. So obviously YingYuan is made ML.
