It's super hard to do already without any kind of injury. They want to consider his well being before his career. Also, it is the more common decision to retire. It's not dramatic if its not outside the norm <3

Also with nerve damage in his arm he would have difficulty with some exercises essential to the sport

Singles and pairs are vastly different in fundamental steps and jumps, not to mention scoring. Also a minimum amount of events has to be attended to qualify for an event each season. He would have to take a season off at least to switch if he hadnt already be in en competing
