They totally change the narrative leading to the break up.. Perhaps they need this to add on to Flora's angst (other than the failed promotion and suicide) that led to her leaving. Unlike the novel, at this stage, Luke has done a lot of boyfriend stuff. If FLora leave just over the failed promotion issue, that would felt petty and uncalled for. With Sun's suicide, then her finding out he liked her all this time, put new light to him saying 'he put in 99% effort, and yet he still didnt get the result he wanted".. I think this phrase would resonate with Flora when she failed the promotion then failed to understand Luke (perceived) distrust of her ability. Leading to her feeling desolated with her Beijing life, and left.

In the novel, there are more lead up / hint/ foreshadowing of his condition... he was even diagnosed and receiving treatment... that it was soo shocking when it happen... the novel handle this very skillfully.... i was crying buckets & screaming no no no when it happen...
