Now thats not something one would like to hear especially if they reconsidering whether to start the show or not.
Frankness is the best policy. Dishonesty from troll accounts that hate the ML (especially one account pretending to be his fan, until this drama aired) led to unnecessary melodrama throughout the airing that other accounts didn't like.
Whispers of Fate is about a powerful protagonist who decides how he intends to achieve his goals and whether he should shoulder responsibilities. Buddhism plays a growing role in his personal evolution. This particular drama is heavily layered with Chinese literature and cultural references, such as the influence of Chinese opera for the villains.
There's no CP for ML just like the novel, and hence there's no romance tags for this drama. Brotherhood is key to him. There are fascinating personal stories and interesting characters (male and female) which he forms friendships with or is antagonistically against, plus riveting fights. If you like the animation "Beyond Time's Gaze" based on an Ergen novel where Xu Qing's most important people are mostly males because of kindnesses rendered to him and wuxia themes are strong, "Whispers of Fate" may be up your alley.
Otherwise, I hope you find a drama you like :) Have a good week ahead!
oh right how old was she when she transmigrated because i'm confused. she transmigrated in 2026 right? and zhou…
She is a 36-year-old successful modern executive with high sales record made into a scapegoat by her company, who fell asleep in utter despair facing the risk of jail, and I assumed her consciousness or soul goes back in time into the body of an 18-year-old with the same name. 18-year-old Xia Xiaolan of 1983 had attempted suicide after being accused of immorality, leading to a badly-tarnished reputation in 1983 within Dahe Village. That is why you see the bandage around 18-year-old Xia Xiaolan's head and that Xia Xiaolan regains consciousness, in episode one.
[ 剧中,夏晓兰穿越回1983年,本质上是一个36岁灵魂寄居在18岁身体里的“孤儿”,她的核心目标是改变命运、守护家人和自我实现。] - I also share this from a news article, in case you need something more than what I am saying.
To cement the horrible social class circumstances and societal expectations of that era in a rural village, the matriarch of the family that her mother married into had no trouble publicly proclaiming that Xia Xiaolan's mother cannot give birth to sons while only having a shameless immoral daughter, hence such a daughter-in-law for Grandma Xia could do the Xia family a favour and die.
The original 36-year-old Xia Xiaolan can be perceived as living a dream, after her consciousness wakes up in 1983. I have not forgotten her sleeping body in the original timeline. When and how this "Dream of Golden Years" ends is not the core focus of this drama, but Zhou Ye as Xia Xiaolan can be seen in various episodes struggling to figure out whether there are other transmigrators, when her time in this era ends, and also believes with dread the possibility of leaving behind everything in this lifetime when she returns to her original timeline. Whether her beliefs are correct or not will depend on the ending of this drama, because this drama already has certain differences from the novel.
As an architecture major, to be honest, I wasn't impressed by Xia Xiaolan's idea of an infinity pool. But before…
Thanks for sharing about infinity swimming pools in resorts of Hawaii, where you are. This drama is set in China, not USA. History-wise, swimming pools in China finally improved within the 1980s, despite the concept of general swimming pools being built earlier such as by 1940s but suffering multiple issues including no ventilation or heating facilities. This problem for public swimming pools persisted into the 1950s and for more than 3 decades since the 1940s, due to economical and technological issues.
In the 90s, entertainment swimming pools were finally built in China, mainly in high-end guest hotels or guesthouses. Xiaolan is in the early 90s after episode 20, so an infinity pool for guests would have been pioneering during that time in China and only affordable for an expensive hotel project in a major city that can obtain enough support plus funding. That is why the obtainable loan amount from a bank is also crucial, which this drama alludes to in episodes 24 and 25.
I have read 360 chapters out of 472 chapters (includes bonus side stories) of the novel, which this drama is adapting.
It's very engrossing and definitely could be great as a drama. Unique revenge storyline for the novel, with FL as key character being a stepmother having learned her lessons after losing her entire blood family and being responsible for her clan being destroyed, and is carefully strategic to prevent all this after being reborn to an earlier timeline of her life still as a stepmother. The family she married into is mostly toxic. She decides to ensure the evil of their wings is clipped, and they must suffer adequate consequences of their choices if they perpetuate the same mindsets. And in doing so, Yun Chu finds a suitable equal as her husband. Nothing like "The Double", which is good because different works carry different appeal and having variety in quality works is always wonderful for drama-watchers. Looking forward to seeing Zhang Yunlong and Esther Yu portraying two interesting, strong-willed and principled characters from this novel!
“知谁便是知音者,且作岩溪雪景看。” - I don't know if this line of poetry and any associated scenes make it into the drama, but it would be beautiful.
This drama reunites Zhang Yunlong with the screenwriter Xu Ting, who was one of three screenwriters for the 2019 MangoTV platform ocean-conservancy romance drama "My Poseidon".
The original novel beginning was a bit different, FL became a senior executive by hard work and overcoming all…
Unlike the novel, they did not make him have a military background but primarily and solely a law background. This passes the censors plus the FL was 36-years-old when she went back in time, so she is almost twice his age emotionally when they first met.
The romance is old-school and properly slow (which also suits the era), so screenwriters can demonstrate the ML with evolving emotional and mental maturity through various events to match FL naturally.
The original novel beginning was a bit different, FL became a senior executive by hard work and overcoming all…
FL was 36-years-old in her original timeline when she went back in time, to be an 18-year-old village girl.
FL is definitely more than 10 years older in mindset than the ML when they first met, so they needed enough episodes to demonstrate his continuous evolving emotional maturity, being able to match the age disparity in their mindsets. That is why it feels so natural for them to be together, especially when we are getting to episode 26.
Love all the business part. But are they getting married or not? Did they just forget about it? Wtf...
If you're referring to Zhou Cheng and Xia Xiaolan, they didn't forget. They have yet to get the marriage license (Kang Wei reminds Zhou Cheng at the beginning of episode 25) and based on spoilers I have seen (not in the IQiyi previews), I believe Xiaolan will disclose her biggest secret to Zhou Cheng in episode 26 about time-travelling which is holding her back emotionally, Zhou Cheng believes her, and that is when things can progress towards marriage with more than a kiss.
WoF and TTW have come true. 《道诡异仙》is the only one that hasn't yet materialised. And yes, he is definitely capable of bringing Li Huowang to life. It's going to be a long wait...
Yes! The drama transitions from 1983 and into the 1990s, covering a significant chunk of a novel containing more than 2300+ chapters with careful pacing and strong mature screenplay. The cast is colourful and engaging, with strong performances. Multiple viewers including myself have noted: The nostalgia is very accurate, with HK drama influences.
The relationships are heartwarming. Be it friendship or old-school romance, you'll find plenty to squee over for different generations. And as a female-empowerment drama of different generations giving people ideas about business and entrepreneurship and the importance of teamwork plus finding the right mentor(s), it is also heartening to see Zhou Ye pull off a powerful heart-stirring performance as a former orphan who experienced bullying, becoming confident and emotionally open, to protect what she previously never had a chance to do.
And if you are curious about kisses, there will be more than one kiss, when certain factors have been established. The romance between the leads is youthful, mature in communication, and not tiringly melodramatic.
For fans who've seen this, my review includes an alternate ending. I'd love to know what you think -- https://mydramalist.com/profile/JohnHart/review/551248
This was so good. Watched it for the Director since in all fairness he got some great dramas under his belt.was…
It's a very engaging drama. Also very rewatchable, as seen from IQiyi's recent stats.
Li Qin slays as a female general in C-dramas.
Here's a few of the comment threads from more than 6 months ago, when everyone was super-engaged about many aspects during the airing episodes of this drama:
https://x.com/i/status/2037183509098602999Are we getting this tomorrow?? 😭 wow I wanna see this ❤️❤️😭
In a reply to the post you linked above, the reply shares the entire clip from a weibo account where Xia Xiaolan confesses to Zhou Cheng in episode 26 that she is from the future. And Zhou Cheng believes her. He tells her that even if she is from another planet, it is alright because she is the Xia Xiaolan she has known for so many years. And then she instinctively moves to kiss him: https://x.com/stellalume/status/2037283390542725528
Haters giving bad ratings. This drama is a dime so far. 👌
Some accounts do it, also because they think the drama is competition for their drama which is about to air (or is currently-airing). I suspect the former, at this point.
When "Dream of Golden Years" had aired almost 10 episodes more than nine days ago, accounts attacked the ratings and downvoted it abruptly from 8.3 to 7.9. People noticed this:
When the ratings went up again, another group attack pushed it down to less than 8.0. MDL has been suffering this odd issue very obviously during 2025, when dramas are attacked by accounts with dishonest intentions. Sad pathetic behaviour.
Now that more than 5000 MDL accounts are watching this drama, being able to offset any such deliberate voting attacks is finally doable even when they happen. Such troll accounts will still be downvoting this drama.
MDL should necessitate registered accounts to be linked to actual mobile numbers, and only one account per mobile number. Or implement a hook that prevents the same IP address from creating multiple accounts within 3 months. That way trolls are less able to create multiple accounts. Glad you're enjoying the drama!
He'll charm your heart to bits. Literally. His chemistry with many different cast characters might make more than…
Luo Yunxi as Tang Lici is quite the gentleman with female characters, consistently firm about his personal boundaries not being violated whenever he is conscious, but also has understandable issues with the topic of betrayals due to a past he is coming to terms with, as of episode 1. He will be beating the crap out of a supporting cast male character. Whether you deem it satisfactory depends on your POV, when you get there XD
Fights are quite awesome. See which is your favourite, when you watch at least three of them!
The screenwriters were quite ingenious, considering the line they had to walk for this heroism-focused drama. Although Tang Lici is so staunchly devoted to certain characters just like the novel, the screenwriters still managed to convey an impression of potential romance (people interested in him) although to be frank, if this were a modern drama: What happens to Tang Lici at one point shortly before episode 12 would be classified as sexual assault on him. Some people find that romantic. Some people find it somewhat revolting. But since it's not a modern drama and the context makes for it as necessary to deal with circumstances not within his control and not of his choosing, you can interpret that incident as whatever you want :)
That's exactly why there's an imbalance in C-dramas nowadays. More than 70% of C-dramas have become idol dramas…
Trying to tell some viewers that kisses were not the norm in C-dramas of the past isn't welcome given some replies I have seen, simply because some inexperienced viewers in C-dramas think the "real" peaking of C-dramas either started in 2010 or ignore the fact that there are quality C-dramas without kisses (but the platforms are hyping up the wrong ones).
In reality outside of MDL, the ongoing quality decline of longform C-dramas for more than 15 years is because of wrong attitudes from some fans in supporting their idols plus attitudes of some artists in the industry ever since early 2010, which is why active users (ie the ones who can actively pay for premium subscriptions) without blinking are continuously declining on Svod platforms such as IQiyi. And you can also see the repercussions in the latest quarterly financial reports.

And hence, support for quality dramas such as "Dream of Golden Years" is important.
