Not sure how I came across this one, but I was in the mood for something cute and funny and gave it a shot. I have watched 6 episodes so far and I love it. Nothing too complicated and so far it's definitely the cute and funny I was looking for.
I decided to read the novel before rewatching the drama when all episodes are made available on Netflix, but I can't get over how different it is. It's a completely different storyline down to the interactions between XLH and DFQC. Well, so far that is, I'm only on chapter 14.
Overall, this is a very enjoyable drama. There are plenty of light and funny moments and it's filled with lovable characters. I liked the FL. She's brave and kind and even though her rudeness in the face of royalty is not very realistic, it's refreshing to see a female character in a historical drama being straightforward and doing things her way. The ML was a good partner for her and keeps her in balance as the more cautious one to pair with her rash personality. I absolutely loved her family. Her grandmother, her parents and her brother were an absolute delight to watch. It's a close and supportive family and their interactions definitely made this drama more enjoyable. Her two maids were also a fun addition to the family.
One thing that would have made this drama better would have been a more focused plot. Some things felt repetitive, especially in the second half of the drama. The two Shi sisters and their actions for example. One of them would have been enough. I feel like two of them was too much of a bad thing. Also, the ML was so defined by his quest for revenge in the beginning of the drama, but it somehow ended up being not that important. Having a more focused plot would have eliminated repetitions and would have given the ML's revenge a bit more of a punch.
All in all, I'm glad I gave this drama a chance. It made me laugh and I fell in love with some of the characters.
''They were both still clearly in love with each other and she knew full well that as a merman he was never going…
Lol true. Xianxia dramas usually have a lot of suffering. Don't mistunderstand though, I really enjoyed this drama, just that some parts were dragged out beyond necessity. Time that could have been spent elsewhere.
''They were both still clearly in love with each other and she knew full well that as a merman he was never going…
It is indeed great that they addressed that it's not exactly acceptable, but I still wish they didn't drag it out for so many episodes. We could have gotten a more complete and satisfying ending if they didn't spend so much time on that.
Finished all 37 episodes and it delivered the silly and funny that I needed. For the most part the characters were fun and the story was light and breezy, so it's a very easy watch. Wang Lu is very much the centre of the story and Xu Kai does well carrying that responsibility. That being said, this drama wouldn't be what it is without the supporting cast. Everyone did a great job portraying their characters. I loved Sandrine in this. She is an absolute delight as the mischievous Elder and does an amazing job in both funny and serious scenes.
There definitely seems to be enough story left to tell in a second season, but who knows if that will ever happen.
If you're looking for something fun and light, give this drama a go. If you're looking for something with a complicated plot and lots of drama, it's probably not for you.
I also had a problem with that stupid decision, but for a different reason. When she let her keep her memories…
Definitely. It's like they just sent away their problem to another realm. Even without her memories, she would still keep her bad personality. She might have turned evil anyway. They should have monitored her a bit closer and have her live a normal mortal life. After all, it's a punishment.
Her sister is still causing problems, even though she didn't realise it but by making that evil character keep…
I also had a problem with that stupid decision, but for a different reason. When she let her keep her memories as a form of punishment, she thought that Yan Dan was dead, so naturally she didn't consider any damage that would do to her. However, letting her keep her memories and therefore all the knowledge about the heavenly realm, all the techiniques, .... would make her a dangerous person in the mortal realm to just about anyone and that's what happened when she decided to use her knowledge to take over the mortal realm. The Heavenly Realm is supposed to protect all the other realms, so that's also part of Zhi Xi's responsibilities, so why did she not consider this? She's supposed to be intelligent, but she just made too many stupid decisions and that's one of the reasons why I could never warm up to her character.
I have a question, when Ying Yuan went down to the mortal realm I thought he would keep his memories so that he…
It's actually explained a bit later in the drama. He was indeed supposed to keep his memories, but on his way to the mortal realm he was attacked and instead reincarnated without his memories.
I think yu mo is a great character, but still love our ML better. Yu no can be the way he is because he has no…
Given Yumo's bloodline, he does have a responsibility, but he chooses to live his life free of it. Partly because of what happened to his clan and partly because he wants to be free and that is in my opinion a better fit for Yan Dan. As I said, I do love the ML as a character and he obviously loves her very much, but in terms of a relationship, he's not that great of a partner for Yan Dan as long as he's weighed down with the well being of the rest of the world. You'll see changes in Ying Yuan in part 2 that will turn him into a better partner.
This drama was on my list for so long, but I always ended up postponing watching it in favour of something else. I'm on episode 4 now and it's all the silly I really needed. Loving it.
Made it to episode 9, but unfortunately I have to drop it. At least I can say I gave it a chance. Honestly, this drama is boring. I can't bring myself to get interested in the story at all. I might have stuck around if there was any chemistry between the main leads, but there's absolutely none. Did the director not notice this? Yukee's acting is not helping either. I have seen my share of innocent, naive and childish FL's (let's face it, there are just way too many of those in Cdramas), but the way she portrayed her is so bad. Her eyes are constantly wide and expressionless, whether she's excited, sad or happy. It's like watching a doll. She has absolutely no personality. The character behaves like a twelve year old. I liked the ML so far and Luo Yun Xi did a great job portraying the character, but without chemistry with the FL, his performance in their shared scenes also falls a bit flat. You need chemistry for the interactions to work and sadly he can't conjure that on his own. The supporting characters are caricatures.
I was really looking forward to seeing the cast of AOL together in a different drama, but this ended up being among the few dramas that I decided to drop. What a waste!
i watched like 20 some episodes and they still had no chemistry and there was no story so i gave up. I think it…
The story is not fascinating me enough at this point. I was hoping it was going to pick up soon. If it does not improve after 20 episodes, you're probably right and it's not worth it. It's a shame really. I liked the cast.
I have watched 4 episodes so far and while I like the ML, because he's all flirty and very gentle, so far there's unfortunately no chemistry between the ML and the FL. I hope that will improve.
