I hadn't realised he was in so many adaptations. I just watched The Disasterous Life of Saiki K and thought he was good in it so I decided to check his MDL profile. I never expected to recognise so many titles!
My sister started to watch the anime today and I ended up seeing some of the episodes with her. I thought it was really funny so when I found out there was a live-action, I decided to watch it as well. This movie was really good! I liked the Assassination Classroom reference too.
I'm coming back here to mention that I wrote the synopsis, but I haven't actually watched the movie yet. Everything I wrote is from what I gathered while researching. I used the synopsis of the Japanese version, what I saw and heard in the trailers and teasers, and what I read on the movie's official Facebook page. I tried to make it as accurate as I could but if anything is incorrect, please fix it.
I was wary of watching this because movies often portray deafness poorly. However, this movie was a pleasant surprise. I can't say they conveyed how it feels to be deaf very well (the ringing, the static-like voices, etc) because it's obviously exaggerated for the sake of the viewer. The social aspects, on the other hand, were done well. People not wanting to talk to Sugihara is realistic because many people avoid those with disabilities. They feel like it takes extra effort to socialise, and so they don't even bother. Teachers and peers treating Sugihara as if he is lesser than them in an attempt to make his life easier is also realistic. People will offer help when it is not requested (which implies uselessness), act overly sympathetic (which comes across as pity), and even downright act like they're charitable or kind for socialising. When it comes to people with disabilities, you should treat them as you would anyone else. If they ask for your help or tell you something you can do that will make things easier for them, then feel free to do so. But taking it upon yourself to do things that you believe would be "helpful" when they haven't told you it would be is completely unwarranted and condescending. It's their life. It's not your place to decide what they need.
It's a Vimeo link because YouTube has copyright stuff and Dailymotion wasn't working for some reason.
