in a xianxia with a mystery sub genre, nothing will make sense if you skip the details. you'll end up hating the drama more and more as you find the characters' actions inexplicable after missing certain details. seeing this comment section makes me realize people don't watch enough mind-challenging shows, often without a direct explanation, we must pick up the clues ourselves and think from the characters' POVs. HRY ignored BJS warnings about mortal realm interference several times, thus he rightfully believes that she would never truly be engaged in the love tribulation properly. out of his love for her, he is willing to make the silent sacrifice. HRY feels dismissed by BJS because of his adherence to the rules, thus she keeps her pregnancy a secret even amidst being abandoned. in her eyes, she treausred their mortal realm marriage but was suddenly abandoned by him in the tribulation lovelessly. the irony is that their conflicting ideals build up resentment but are also the ultimate "love trial". as immortals, they must experience all the emotional complications mortals face for their trial. hope this helps ! although I understand that there are more interpretations, but this one clicks the most for me 🫶

Without the dispute of “to intervene with mortals or not”, their marriage would be high sailing with no problems. Their tribulation is that even with rules set, they simply can’t compromise ideals and their love turns sour. I think that’s just an intentional plot device

it's not truly specific. for example in eternal love, the dijun had to get his heartbroken and fengjiu was conveniently the one to do it. basically the immortals are forced to face some form of emotional hardship in the mortal world, and the trial is meant to be shrouded in mystery (if you anticipate your pain, you don't truly feel it 🥲)

I watched BTS and I get what you're saying, her actual voice is capable of mirroring the intonations of the script, but VAs are naturally trained to expand their vocal register. There's a clearer distinction btwn HRY/LQY or when she's vengeful/affection when the VA can resiliently change their tone. These changes are usually made do to director's vision or scheduling conflict (dubbing does take a lot of time), not really as an "F U" to the actor 🫶

agreed, I liked her og voice acting in SOKP cause she truly fit that villainess role, but for roles like shiyi in One and Only, it makes more sense to hire a VA with a higher voice register.

it's a common trope to a lot of xianxias, immortals must "taste the bitterness" of mortal life, and usually that would be a trial related to love/heartbreak

i think the mdl situation has always been muddy but this year has been especially rough. most of my fav dramas from this year ended up with lower than expected ratings 😭😭😭

It was so touching seeing HRY doting on the children with miserable fates, secretly harboring the pain of believing her husband was unwilling to grant her that happiness. They both stand for justice, but HRY is definitely closer to abiding the "mortal's version" of it. He's more in tune with his logic while she's more in tune with her emotions, basically setting her up to resent him for a lack of sympathy for mortals and ultimately blame him for leaving her and her son (even though it was not his intended outcome). Time to twist the knife in my heart 😭😭😭

iirc Siling/Dacheng are said to be of the same origin so their titles are quite equal, the "empyrean level" is above dacheng, so his role is to guard the infinite stele / gate to three realms so he seems powerful but he's still not the highest authority. it's confusing bc in one of the episodes the north/east/south/west lords remind him of his duty to protect and detach from his emotions to keep the world safe, but they clearly can't force or directly punish him. i assume we'll see more in the 400yr flashback where the "heavenly emissary" will intervene

i def find this plotline more logical bc the characters value all their relationships, i bet if LQY actually left Zhang Suan and went with Bai Jiusi he would be the final and most evil villain in the drama 😂
