Oh Empress Dowager I could never form a solid opinion on you … as much as I disagree with how her rise to power disregarded the lives of many innocent civilians, we see male emperors do it all the time and sit on the throne just fine. A lot of dramas let the person in power sit on the throne as their corrupt pawns die, so im glad that they’re focusing on her role in these schemes as well. I still feel slightly bad for her 😓
On 31.. beginning of it. In all fairness she could have told him the whole story and what she did. This is what…
He went to the extent of setting the pastry wrapper in flames, so you could tell that he was in a state of rage/despair beyond saving which only time/introspection could fix (he drank with his colleagues then immediately regretted it the next day lol). He spent days in solitude trying to reach this decision, and to him (albeit an incorrect take), his act of divorce was like letting her be free of her debt. Third uncle warning Ye Li about how continuous scheming can’t bring about a stable life and Mo Xiu Yao telling her “sometimes I really don’t get you” seemed like foreshadowing that this phase would happen. I think a lot of people neglect the effect of dramatic irony, as in we the audience have known her intentions all along, but he learned it just yesterday (of plot time), so this shocking revelation that relates to the traumatic events of his brother’s death and his own paralysis hits him harder. She has shown him continuous acts of love which he does acknowledge later, but in the heat of the argument he could only feel the pain of having such a large truth withheld from him, by his spouse. These acts then immediately all felt like repayments, since she kept him out of the know for so long. I also don’t believe Ye Li was wrong for her reaction because you can tell by her conversation with Qing Shuang (voicing her inner thoughts) that she knows her idealized future with Mo Xiu Yao is on thin ice, with the truth being like a ticking time bomb. At the moment they both accepted “false realities” that ultimately highlighted their mutual lack trust. He needed to trust in the sincerity of affection and she needed to trust in the strength of their relationship. This reminds me a lot of the dynamic in Kimi No Todoke (anime). Sorry for long rant all takes are valid, I just see a lot of comments dogging on one side and I get antsy easily 😂
ep 29, am catching up rn in hopes that lingyun will have a comeback from the dead like mo jingli... my boy feng zhi yao yearns to earn (not a novel reader so not sure what will happen)
qin cang and tinglan have little screentime but still feel very sweet to me.. so glad they didnt make her a nonsensical romantic chasing a man in exile and kept her true to character!! may fate bring them together again
im so glad that their misunderstandings can be easily cleared with communication. no unnecessary angst is thrown in; they gradually build trust in each other and both show continuous care 💞 so sweet 😭
I’m currently at Episode 21 and really loving this drama. I can understand why some viewers feel the romance…
I agree with this take!! It's hard to get a slowburn just right bc everyone has different preferences, but for me, I'm chill with it as long as the romance is synonymous with the plot (romance doesn't replace character ambitions, and plot doesn't create unrealistic periods of separation for max angst)
