This is adapted from a novel aimed at a target audience. When it's made into a drama, inevitably it will look…
Maybe there will be one, but it's not this one I'm afraid. This is first and foremost a love story just set in the army. She gets masses of plot armour and gets saved a few times, so there is nothing unique about her character.

Being able spin and wave the sword is just like any other wuxia fight scene. Viewers are mainly captivated by her funny cutesy scenes. Pushing the boundaries of being cheeky with her favourite man and getting away with it. These scenes are easily transferable to any era and any type of workplace set up.

As for the novel, perhaps it was a little dated and too earnest they felt they needed more humour to make these scenes more palatable. Only novel readers will know.

I would have love this drama if they casted someone tougher as the Female General. So far, only two female actresses…
i think the problem is more the way they wrote her character in the script than the casting. she doesn't seem like someone who was able to become a general under disguise, she's too happy-go-lucky, none of the guys in the garrison act like that.
mulan 2009 def did well with the girl disguised as man

I would have love this drama if they casted someone tougher as the Female General. So far, only two female actresses of whom I know had portrayed such role was Zhao Wei as a soldier in Mulan (2009) and Liu Shi Shi as an Assassin in Journey to Love (2023). Maybe they are others which I do not know.

i feel u. it's objectively not that great so i'm also surprised by the rating. i like the actors and they're cute…
Just so you know, ratings are usually done by ones that don't normally comment. There is a core portion of users that make accounts for the purpose of rating only. (up or down). It's something that MDL cannot control right now.

I advise that new users are not allowed to review or rate until 6 months have lapsed. That way, hopefully they will have moved on. Most ratings with big novel adaptations or with large fandoms are playing this game sadly. I am not trying to slander anyone in particular, but this is something that is so obvious.

The end result is the rating system is abused and makes a mockery of ratings as being even credible. Smaller dramas or dramas that have less romance are not touched so you will see more average ratings. I think more a realistic rating. Whereas dramas with idol actors & with romance are often inflated regardless of plot and acting. I know what I write is boring and repeated, but those that ask, I always have to say it.

Thank you someone who also agrees with me i personally believe the rating is high because of the romance thats why it didnt live to our expectations, this drama is a romcom taking place in militarily tiers , i am really hoping the other general drama i am waiting for wont disappoints me like this one

Yeah, I totally agree. I am starting to feel bored with all the filler tbh. There's too many scenes btw the main cp, which aren't about the plot but just for some romantic moments, to my liking. I need more of the plot to move. I thought the first ep started off pretty strong. Tbh, there are some pretty epic scenes and eps which I rave about, but a lot of the eps feel like filler to me, and indeed the drama feels all over the place. Like it's quite confusing me where we are headed. We're almost halfway thru the drama and here we are 😩

If you want a good drama with a female general and revenge, try "Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance." It's a mini drama but it's a really good one. It also has a much darker and more intense tone than this one.

i feel u. it's objectively not that great so i'm also surprised by the rating. i like the actors and they're cute together but the story's all over the place. i don't watch dramas just for some flirty moments but for good character writing, relationship development, and a solid plotline, so it's also disappointing for me, especially by ep 15 and things aren't improving. she seems less like a female general and more like a random girl who happened to receive a general's memories. that maybe would've worked with the rebirth plotline but not the current one.

I’m so disappointed. I’ve read the novel multiple times waiting for the drama but it’s real bad. I dropped at ep 6. I can’t believe this is what I’ve been waiting for 2 years to watch. The fl is so weak considering she was a soldier who rose through ranks to the title of general. Even her disguise is not good. how come she wasn’t caught before if it was easily discovered from touching the ml from behind. And she got flustered when asked to take off her shirt. Was that the first time she was asked for that? Plus she should have scars on her smooth body. What a sloppy work. There are a lot more.
could you tell me if anyone has problems like me? I fell like I’m strange when I see the 8.7 rating

This drama is not hitting the spot for me!! I feel like they cast the wrong actress to play a demanding character…
The problem is many of these dramas are lifted from novels that are targeted to young teenagers/young women and when adapted they look Disney-esk because it's now viewed to a wider audience, and this one no different.

They will stretch reality to such a manner that is fit for a child to watch. Anyone over the age of 21 will just watch as a fantasy. Of course young female audiences want to see the most smallest and delicate play a "man's" traditional role & be amongst the men. Boss them about and give them a good telling off. It's pure fantasy with lots of hope. Truth is, these storylines exist because in reality, it's the polar opposite of the storylines inside the novels.

This drama is not hitting the spot for me!! I feel like they cast the wrong actress to play a demanding character like a general leading an ARMY, she just simply doesn't have that aura around her so it's hard to really believe that she can lead an entire army.
You see, this is where I find Chinese dramas lacking. The actors don't even look like they fit the characters they are playing. They could've made her look taller, make her gain weight and muscle, put her in a suit, ..etc to fit the physique of a military man. At least the ML has some muscles going on and he's not the usual skinny model playing soldier..

She’s acting a bit too childish at the moment, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her enter her true…
This is adapted from a novel aimed at a target audience. When it's made into a drama, inevitably it will look a bit weird to a wider audience. No doubt, it was made this way for leeway of growth like novels of that type.

I cringe when I watch these episodes of the her prancing around the commander. They want females to be themselves, and sadly that consists of being chid-like, pre-pubescent. Note this is not an accident but through years of a male dominated world that have seeped into the mainstream and even female authors are unaware of being brainwashed.

Knowing this persona is to serve a purpose. Most likely trying to resonate with the target audience against a back-drop of an army setting. Unrealistic, I know. In reality, we all know she would need to modify herself, but the plot armour is firmly in place. I can bet, even when she's general, she will still maintain the silliness and the cutesy persona. Why? It's a Disney-esk version of a female general. We can't have a dusty-faced brute that doesn't shave and follow a ten step facial routine. That's for another kind of drama.

I really wished they had explored He Yan’s s upbringing in more depth and shown us her experiences as she went through everything in episode 1 Instead of just a few short scenes and jumping back and forth, it would’ve been more impactful to actually see what she endured. I understand the story was kept straightforward and to the point, and I also know some scenes were likely cut due to the situation with that actor—but even so, I’m sure they could’ve done something…

I know this is one of the awaited dramas but 8.7 for 12 episodes ? Def not real. I am planning to watch this after I finish another drama but now I am suspicious of this kind of hype and overrate.
