Tbh, I don't think either of the male leads are doing a great job? The emperor a little worse than the other. Wang Sen though...he's really working out for me here! And about the emperor/shifu, you can tell there is something there but the show doesn't really showing properly. There is just a shadow of intimacy there.
It could be the acting and a combination of the direction. You direct every show differently based on your vision…

I feel bad comparing anyone with Mark Chao's performance in 10miles. That was a truly amazing duo and I have to admit it's hard to watch YM with anyone else, knowing she has reached peak chemistry with MC in 10miles! So I wouldn't hold it against the ML here either.

I think some really zigzag ageism is at play here. I personally like how cdramas(and kdrams) still have older actresses as main charactes. Meanwhile yang mi is not even that old!!! I get the exhaustion of seeing a thirty-something year old acting cute and childish to pass as 15 but here, the character is not even like that, so who cares!
