They discussed the meaning of that before and after the poem, so I think the poem (if she had been able to read it) would also have kind of meant (I'm the context of affection and the meaning ofthe kite string) "I have affection for you but don't intend to try and control you, if you say the word, I will tie myself to you"

it was all him. when he sliced at the candle holder with the sword, the stabby bit in the middle came off and flew into the wall, and that's what he was impaled on.
