I think the writers did what was possible to do for the best for the drama. They took into account the original source (the book), and the heterogeneous expectations of the audience. Despite some inconsistencies (I still think they captured the real intention of the female writer of the book). The message of mutual healing, redemption, hope. Yes, those parts are mentioned in the beginning. It's not his personality most of the time in the book. They work together, they go through hardships together. So (it's like those parts are not plausible) they were in the book.
